APA 6th Edition Citation and Referencing Guide
APA 6th Edition Citation and Referencing Guide
APA is a popular style of referencing. This is the referencing style you will need to use at MUFY. You are
also likely to use this referencing style at Monash University.
You must always have both of these parts. If you cite something in-text, you must include it in your
reference list. Similarly, if something is included in your reference list, it must be cited in-text.
In-text citations
You must use an in-text citation every time you use someone else's ideas or words. In other words, if you
use a quotation or a paraphrase, you must include an in-text citation.
An in-text citation should include the author(s) surname and year of publication, e.g. (Smith, 2010). If you
are citing a quotation then you should also include the page number (Smith, 2010, p. 48).
Note: Only the text that you actually read (Jones & Chen, 2015) should be included in
the reference list.
Reference List
Your reference list contains all of the texts you cited in your assessment task. The list should
● begin on a new page
● be organised in alphabetical order
The purpose of a reference list is to allow the person reading your assessment task (your teacher) to find
the texts that you have used. Therefore, it is important that you provide accurate and comprehensive
details for each text.
The author(s) should always be the first piece of information, and you should include all authors in the
