Strength Evaluation of Existing Structures

Location- Station km 41+550, 50+400

Type of structure- slab bridge
Clear Span- 11 m
Deck Depth= 590 m
Mmax 391.73 kN-m Maximum Moment and Shear force due to the
Vmax 186.91 kN-m rating legal truck loads allowed on the bridge.

Dead Load Moments

Strip Widths
Interior Strip 3315.381 3.315
Mmax 118.155 kN-m/m
Vmax 56.378 kN-m/m

The dead load for a meter strip is computed as follows

Deck: 14.75 kN/m
Rails: 1.125 kN/m
Posts: 1.226 kN/m
Curb: 1.6 kN/m
∑ = 18.700962 kN/m

Interior strip: MDL1=W*1/2*m1*L= 223.09 kN-m/m

Capacity Determination, Interior strip

For strength evaluation, reference is made to TCDE Design Projects as the design was made
by TCDE .for the last 20-30years we have found the drawing of structure of slab bridges
8m,9m,10m at the head office ofTCDE. design stduio In accordance with the drawing, the
following data have been utilized.

Concrete fc'= 20.7 Mpa

Steel fy= 276 Mpa
Main Reinforcement slab bridge10m : 35Ø30 with spacing of c/c240mm.
Ø 30 c/c 240
Cover = 25 as= 706.5
2
As 5 3532.5 mm /m
On the basis of these dimensions obtained, the following resistance capacity is determined.
2
Mcr=bed ρfy(1-0.59ρfy/fc')
Vcr=Vc=0.14 fc^0.5'*dv*bv
Accordingly,
be= 1000 mm fy= 276 Mpa
d= 550 mm fc'= 20.7 Mpa
ρ=As/(bd)= 0.0064227
Shear and moment at critical sections, (i.e. d distance from face of
V
support.)
M
VLL= 56.38 VDL= 81.125

Thus, Mcr= 509140059 Nmm/m = 509.140 kN-m/m

Vcr= 350328.846 N/m = 350.329 kN/m

Rating Factor for the Bridge

Resistance factor 0.85

dead load factor 0.85
Live load factor for rating Legal Truck 1.2
Live load impact factor 1.1
RFmoment= 1.559 RFshear= 3.075

Edge Strip 1800 1.8

Calculation of Live Load effects per strip width
Mmax 130.5766 kN-m/m
Vmax 62.3047619 kN-m/m
Exterior strip: MDL1=W*1/2*m1*L= 282.85204 kN-m/m
Capacity Determination (Edge Strip)
Main Reinforcement slab bridge10m : 35Ø30 with spacing of c/c240mm.
35 Ø 30 c/c 240
As 5 3532.5 mm2/m
On the basis of these dimensions obtained, the following resistance capacity is determined.
ρ=As/(bd)= 0.0064227
VLL= 62.304762
VDL= 102.85529

Thus, Mcr= 509140059 Nmm/m = 509.14006 kN-m/m

Vcr= 350328.846 N/m = 350.329 kN/m
RFmoment= 1.116 RFshear= 2.558

Thus, RF for the Bridge, RFb= 1.116
