Competency: Demonstrate proficiency in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) techniques following

AWS, ASME, ANSI, and ISO Welding Codes.

Objectives:

1. Identify and explain the different welding codes and their significance in the welding industry.
2. Apply the correct techniques and procedures in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) based on
AWS, ASME, ANSI, and ISO Welding Codes.
3. Evaluate and assess the quality of SMAW welds based on the specified welding codes.

Grade Level: 11 Subject: Shielded Metal Arc Welding

(1) Review

 Begin the lesson by reviewing the basic principles of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW),
including the equipment and safety precautions.
 Discuss the importance of following welding codes, such as AWS, ASME, ANSI, and ISO, in
ensuring quality and safety in welding.

(2) Motivation

 Show a video or present a case study highlighting the consequences of not following welding
codes and standards.
 Engage students in a discussion about the potential risks and hazards involved in welding
without adhering to proper codes and specifications.

(3) Activity - Workshop on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Techniques Instructions: a. Divide
students into small groups. b. Provide each group with a welding workstation equipped with SMAW
equipment and materials. c. Assign each group a specific welding code (AWS, ASME, ANSI, or ISO). d.
Instruct students to research and prepare a presentation on their assigned welding code, including its
purpose, requirements, and application in SMAW. e. Each group will demonstrate a SMAW weld
following their assigned welding code. f. Encourage students to discuss and compare the differences
between the welding techniques and requirements of each code. g. Facilitate a class discussion to
share and analyze the findings of each group.

(4) Analysis

 Discuss the similarities and differences between the different welding codes presented by the
groups.
 Analyze the impact of following the correct welding code on the quality, strength, and safety of
the welds.

(5) Abstraction

 Summarize the key points and principles learned from the analysis of the different welding
codes.
 Emphasize the importance of understanding and applying the appropriate welding code in
SMAW.

(6) Application - Real-Life Problem

 Present a real-life scenario where a specific welding code needs to be applied in a welding
project.
 Ask students to analyze the scenario and identify the relevant welding code, procedures, and
techniques to be used.
 Instruct students to propose a solution and explain their reasoning based on the chosen
welding code.

(7) Assessment

1. Multiple Choice: Which welding code is commonly used for structural steel welding? a) AWS
D1.1 b) ASME Section IX c) ANSI/AWS A2.4 d) ISO 5817 Answer: a) AWS D1.1

2. True or False: ANSI/AWS A2.4 specifies the requirements for carbon steel electrodes for
shielded metal arc welding. Answer: True

3. Fill in the Blanks: ASME Section IX provides the requirements for _________ qualification and
_________ of welders. Answer: welder, procedure

4. Match the following welding codes with their corresponding organizations:

 AWS (American Welding Society)

 ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
 ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
 ISO (International Organization for Standardization) Answer: AWS - American Welding
Society, ASME - American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ANSI - American National
Standards Institute, ISO - International Organization for Standardization
5. Short Answer: Explain the significance of following welding codes in the welding industry.
Answer: Welding codes ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of welds by providing
standardized procedures, techniques, and requirements. They also facilitate communication
and understanding between different stakeholders in the welding industry.

(8) Assignment Research and write a brief report on the latest updates and revisions in the AWS D1.1
welding code. Discuss the implications of these updates in the field of structural steel welding.
