FILIPINO'S VIEW ABOUT
SPIRITUAL SELF
Filipinos are considered to be
deeply religious. The country touts
FILIPINO
itself as the largest Christian
nation in Asia. Being religious can
be traced back to the time when
the Spaniards conquered the land,
religious orders were there to
propagate Catholicism.

WESTERN'S VIEW ABOUT
SPIRITUAL SELF
Western philosophy typically
conceptualizes the self as a stable,
WESTERN
controlling entity, comparable to a
pilot, while Eastern philosophies
such as Buddhism argue that the
self is an illusion, a byproduct of
our thought processes.
WESTERN
PHILOSOPHY
- Soul is the principle of life in man
- Body is the matter, soul is the form

As long as body and soul are

one unit, man is alive.
EASTERN
PHILOSOPHY
Eastern philosophy views "the self" as an illusion. Eastern
religions believe that we are all interconnected and part
of a greater universal whole. Hindus believe that the
Atman, or human soul, is a part of Brahman, the soul of
god. Atman is part of Brahman, and therefore cannot be a
completely separate entity or "self." Buddhists believe that
we are all so interconnected that there can be no
distinctions of "self" made between us, and "the self" is
ultimately an illusion.
AMERICAN'S VIEW ABOUT
SPIRITUAL SELF
The United States is significantly more
religious than other prosperous Western
AMERICAN
countries, with a large, lively, and
diversified religious landscape. The vast
majority of Americans identify as
religious or spiritual, believe in a higher
force, and practice spirituality.
THREE MEANINGS OF

1. The Spiritual Self as understood from Buddhism, Hinduism and Psychology is

the Self as differentiated from your subpersonalities, feelings, and body image.

2. The spiritual self is best manifested in one's ability to use moral sensibility and

practices.

subjective part of self.

indestructible and repeatedly takes on a physical body until
moksha. Moksha is a term in Hinduism which refers to the various

and rebirth ends.
