Sec 1 - Unit (6+5) Revision

(1) What is meant "atom" and "element"?
Ans: Elements are made up of particles called atoms. Atoms are the tiny particles that
makes up everything around us.
(2) State the properties and used of platinum.
Ans: Platinum conducts electricity well, it is shiny and not damaged by water. It is
used for jewellery, computer hard disks and catalytic converters from cars.
(3) Explain why metals have high melting and boiling point.
Ans: The force of attraction between the particles are strong, which makes it need
high temperature to melt it or boil it.
(4) Explain why metals are strong and non-metals are weak.
Ans: Metals are strong because they have strong attraction between particles and non-
metals have weaker attraction between particles. This explains why metals have
higher melting and boiling point than non-metals
(5) What is a compound? Give one difference between an element and a compound.
Ans: Compound is “two or more different elements.” Elements are pure substances
that are made from only one type of atom. Compounds are substances that are made of
two or more different types of elements that are bonded by some kind of bonding.
(6) Name the compounds made up of atoms of the elements below.
(a) magnesium and oxygen Ans: Magnesium oxide
(b) iron and sulfur Iron sulfite
(c) aluminium and chlorine Aluminium chloride
(d) iron and bromine Iron bromide
(7) The compounds below are each made up of atoms of three elements. For each
compound, give the names of these three elements.
(a) calcium carbonate Ans: Calcium, Carbon, Oxygen
(b) iron sulfate Iron, Sulfur, Oxygen
(c) sodium nitrate Sodium, nitrogen, oxygen
(d) copper sulfate Copper, Sulfur, oxygen
(8) The diagrams show some particles of gases.

(a) Write the letters of the diagrams that show gases that exist as single atoms. D
(b) Write the letters of the diagrams that show gases that exist as molecules. A,B,C,E
(c) Write the letters of the diagram that shows a mixture of elements. A
(d) Write the letters of the diagram that shows a mixture of compounds. C
(e) Write a letter of the diagram that shows a mixture of an element and a compound. B, A
(f) Write the letter of the diagram that shows a single element. D
(g) Write the letter of the diagram that shows a single compound. E
(9) Write the names of the elements represented by the formulae below.
(i) MgSO4 (ii) NaCl (iii) CaCO3 (iv) BeO (v) KOH
Magnesium Sulfate Sodium Chloride Calcium Carbonate Beryllium Oxide Potassium Hydroxide
(10) Draw lines to match the names to the formulae.
(a) iodine (i) CO Ans: a) iii)
(b) dinitrogen tetroxide (ii) SO2 b) iv)
(c) carbon monoxide (iii) I2 c) i)
(d) carbon dioxide (iv) N2O4 d) v)
(e) sulfur trioxide (v) CO2 e) ii)

(11) Complete the sentences below using these phrases. You can use each phrase once,
more than once, or not at all.
one more than one different from the same as can vary
are already the same
A compound is made up of __(i)__ type of atom. Its properties are __(ii)__ the
elements that are in it. The amount of each element in a certain compound __(iii)__.
A mixture contains __(iv)__ substance. Its properties are __(v)__ the substances that
are in it. The amount of the substances in a mixture __(vi)__.
Ans: i) More than one
ii) different from
iii) can vary
iv) more than one
v) different from
vi) can vary
(12) The pile chart shows the percentage by mass of the different elements that made up
the substances in the Earth's crust.

(a) Write down the names and symbols of 6 metal elements in the Earth's crust.
Ans: aluminium, iron, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium
(b) Name the metal element in the Earth's crust which is present in the greatest amount.
Ans: Aluminium.
(c) Name the two elements which together make up 75% of the mass of the Earth's crust.
Ans: Silicon, oxygen.
(d) Oxygen exist in the Earth's crust not as an element, but in compounds. Give one
difference between an element and a compound.
Ans: Elements are pure substances that are made from only one type of atom.
Compounds are substances that are made of two or more different types of
elements that are bonded by some kind of bonding.
(13) (a) List three factors that affect the speed of diffusion.
Ans: Temperature, size and masses of particles and the states of the substances that
are diffusing.
(b) Diffusion happens more slowly in liquid than in gas. Explain why.
Ans: The particles in liquid is slower than in gas
(14) (a) Explain why the solid density is greater than the liquid density.
Ans: The particles are more closely packed in a solid than in a liquid.
(b) Explain why ice floats on water.
Ans: Ice floats on water because it has lower density than water.
(15) Explain why boiling point changes with altitude.
Ans: The air pressure is not the same throughout different altitudes.
(16) When the plastic bottle puts in a freezer, the bottle collapsed. Why?
Ans: The air inside the plastic bottle moves more slowly so the air pressure decreases
which in turn decreases the volume of the air.
