Infanteriedivision Potsdam

Infanteriedivision Potsdam
Festungs Harz

The Infanteriedivision Potsdam was formed 29

March 1945 from training and replacement units at
Truppenübungsplatz Döberitz (Military Training
Ground Döberitz) based around a cadre from the
destroyed 85. Infanteriedivision, it was also briefly
designated 85. Infanteriedivision before being
given the name Potsdam on 4 April 1945.

From 8 April 1945, with the division still forming,

individual units began being transferred by train to
the Harz Mountains. There, they became part of
Festungs Harz and were deployed in the area
between Wernigerode and Quedlinburg. Due the
chaotic nature of the front and the gradual
deployment of the division, the different elements
were used separately as they arrived at the front,
with many of them suffering heavy losses. On 20
April 1945, after the division had taken heavy
loses, the division commander dismissed his men
and the division broke up.
The division was
named after the
town of Potsdam.

Surviving
elements of the
division were
used to form the
Füsilier-Bataillon
in Infanteriedivisi
on Scharnhorst.
