The Legend of Binangonan

The town of Binangonan is located to the east of Laguna de

Bay, situated between the provinces of Rizal and Laguna.

In the beginning, the residents of Binangonan were all

relatives. They were devout and prayerful, practicing bayanihan,
where they helped and supported each other in times of joy and
sorrow.

The town celebrated its festival with much every year. Even
before the eve of the festivity, people were already happily
preparing and cooking.

However, all the preparations became meaningless when a

powerful typhoon struck the town. Many were injured, livelihoods
were destroyed, and large waves washed ashore, carrying with
them a man.

A local healer attended to the man, thinking he was already

dead and not breathing. Despite this, the healer continued
massaging him. The healer pressed on his back to expel the
swallowed water. The healer persisted until, after a moment, the
man they thought was dead started breathing, moving, and
attempting to rise.

"Judging by the quality of his pants and attire, he's not just a
fisherman. Help him and bring him to us," said the town mayor.

News quickly spread in the village and nearby areas about the
"resurrection of the dead." Since then, that seaside area was
called "Binangunan ng Patay" or "Risen by the Dead."

The resurrected man refused to speak, so everyone assumed

he was mute. The "mute" was clean and hardworking, earning the
trust of the mayor and even getting close to the mayor's daughter.
Diaga, the mayor's daughter, became the girlfriend of the "mute."

Diega eventually discovered that the man was not truly mute.
His name was Isagani, and he was studying under a priest in
Manila. He ran away after being falsely accused of theft. He
sought refuge with a friend in Patoros.

"One day, I went boating to ease my troubled mind. It was the

first time I went alone. At sea, a strong wind caught me. I was
carried far away. The waves grew, and the boat sank. I tried to
cling to the boat, but from exhaustion, I lost consciousness,"
Isagani sadly narrated.

"Poor you," said the compassionate young lady. The two grew
closer and decided to elope to fulfill their dreams. Under the full
moon, they slowly descended and passed by the seaside.
Unfortunately, they were encountered by the mayor, who was
taking a stroll in that area. The mayor, furious with Isagani,
severely injured him, and Isagani died. The mayor, shocked by his
actions, fled, leaving the weeping lady beside Isagani's lifeless
body. Overwhelmed with grief, the young lady took her own life
next to Isagani.

The following day, people found the two bodies right there, in
the place where Isagani had risen. That same location became
their final resting place. Since then, that area has been called
Binangonan.
