Function (2)

1. What are the hazards of Bulk cargo?

• Liquefaction
• Cargo shifting
• Structural damage due to improper distribution
• Chemical hazard
• Health hazard

2. Which code you have to ref when loading Bulk cargo?

International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo code (IMSBC code)

3. How many group of cargo In the IMSBC Code?

Group A = cargo which may liquefy
Group B = Cargo which possess Chemical Hazard
Group C = Cargo which neither liquefy nor possess Chemical hazard

4. What is the purpose of ventilation?

• To prevent Sweating
• To remove bad smell (odor) from the cargo
• To remove dangerous gases from cargo
• To supply fresh air to cargo
• To remove heat from cargo

5. Stack Load
Stack load container loaded at each row is supported 4 point of stack cone(also
called anchor point).
6. Permissible Deck load?
Load per unit area without straining the deck.
Maximum weight of cargo can be safely loaded on unit area without straining
the deck.

7. What is Ship Sweat? How to prevent it?

When ship goes from warm place to cold place. The warm air in the hold
cooled by surrounding air which below dew point. Water vapor in the cargo
hold which condense out into water droplets on ship's structure. Ship's sweat
can damage the cargo. To prevent this effect by ventilation.

8. What is cargo Sweat? How to prevent it?

Occurs when ventilation carried out during the ship goes from a cold space to
warm place. Cargo is cold & incoming air is warm, if warm air contact with cold
cargo which below dew point temperature & water droplets condense on
cargo. So ventilation should restricted to prevent cargo sweat.

9. What is Mate receipt?

A mate’s receipt is a receipt given and signed by the mate for the goods
actually received onboard the ship, which shows identification marks of the
cargo from tally books

10. What is B/L?

B/L is a document issued by carrier for goods either received into his custody
or shipped on board his vessel.
11. How the B/L is generated?
(1) The shipper brings his cargo for loading and tenders shipping note to the
carrier, describing the goods to be loaded.
(2) The goods are tallied as they are loaded.
(3) On completion of loading the ship issues a mate’s receipt to the shipper
(containing details of the goods).Original MR to be given to shipper and a copy
retained onboard.
(4) The shipper, obtains a set of blank B/L (original and any “copy”).
(5) The shipper copies the details of the goods from the mate’s receipt onto the
B/L.
(6) The shipper brings the set of original bills of lading to the carrier, carrier’s
agent or master for signature.
(7) Freight, or part of the freight, may be payable at this stage. If freight is fully
paid, the bill of lading is endorsed “'Freight paid".
(8) The carrier’s agent or master compares the details of MR and B/L and, if no
changes, signs the original B/L. (Any remarks on the mate’s receipt should also
appear on the B/L).
(9) The bills of lading are issued to the shipper in exchange for the original
mate’s receipt.

12. What are the functions of B/L?

B/L is a document issued by carrier for goods either received into his
custody or shipped on board his vessel.
Chief functions of a bill of lading
(1) is a receipt for goods specified therein;
(B/L is only be issued by carrier once goods have been
received into his custody or shipped on board )
(2) is a document of title;
( B/L is a transferable and negotiable document .Someone
who hold B/L is deemed owner of goods)
(3) is evidence of a contract;
• B/L contains carrier's terms, conditions and exceptions.
• Its signed only by carrier or his agent.
• Although not signed by both parties, it is strong evidence that a contract of
carriage with carrier and the shipper.

13. What do you need to check before signing the B/L?

Checking before sing B/L ( As a Master )

(1) must be in proper form;
(2) goods have actually been shipped;
(3) date of shipment is correct;
(4) Freight, if prepayable, has been paid;
(5) any clause corresponding Mate's Receipt;
(6) Charter Party terms do not conflict with B/L terms;
(7) number of original bills is stated.
