A. PROJECT TITLE AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Ecumenical Chapel
B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
To promote a positive relation between different religion, the university
decided to construct an “Ecumenical Chapel” within the campus.

The ecumenical chapel is a type of building designed for worship and

religious activities similar to other types of church and chapel. However, it
differs in terms of its appearance and details as it portrays no specific
religion. As a rule of thumb in designing ecumenical chapel, it should not
represent any religion but instead, it must provide unity among them.
Associations of certain symbolic elements in the design (like cross) violate the
principle of ecumenism as they only portray a certain belief. It must instead
use universal symbolic elements to describe God (an example is a crown,
sun, etc.)

The architect is tasked to design a chapel that will serve as a meditation and
praying area for students and staffs having different religions and beliefs.
The chapel is to be a landmark and a place for social gathering.

C. PROJECT SITE FEATURES

The project site is a rectangular Interior lot having a Twenty meter (20.00 m.)
wide frontage and Twelve-meter Depth (12.00 m.). Located four meters
(4.00m) from the rear and ten meters (10.00m) from the side of the lot is a
large century old acacia tree that is being preserved by the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources.
