A-Tisket, A-Tasket has no particular meaning. The lyrics tell a story of a young child who lost a green and yellow basket. A little girl who was walking around aimlessly found it and took it to the market while the youngster who misplaced the basket laments over the loss. The Run-Around Rag, by Jason Sifford Jason Sifford grew up listening to his mother play Scott Joplin’s rags on the piano, and being from southwest Missouri, he has always felt close to ragtime music. Joplin is the most well-known ragtime musician and one of its lending composers. This original rag recreates the sounds that make his music so enjoyable to hear and inviting to play. You can play this piece quickly and not fast, but since fast is fun, feel free to “run-around” the keyboard and explore this rag at whatever speed you like once you have leamed it well! Swingin’ Cats, by Christopher Goldston The title of this original piece reflects the energetic feel of swing music. The fun sounds of swing are created by its medium-to-fast tempo and rhythm, Like jazz players, swing musicians often “tiff,” or improvise, on the lively tempo of swing music and can use a variety of instruments to create a swing sound. The minor sounds in this piece give it a jazzy feel. Can you imagine cats swinging to this music when you play it? When the Saints Go Marching In, Traditional Spiritual When the Saints Go Marching in is a traditional African-American spiritval. Spiricuals are the best known of all types of American folk songs and originated in the plantations and churches of the Southern states during the years before the Civil War. There are no known composers for these folk songs which were created and passed on verbally by the early African-American community. This arrangement is a jazz interpretation of the beautiful spiritual 139 Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home? by Hughie Cannon Hughie Cannon was a pianist who accompanied a number of musical acts. This piece is the second in a series of songs about Bill Bailey and his life, and is the one that has endured the longest. The legend behind this song, although Cannon denied it, is that it was inspired by the story of a real Bill Bailey who was a performer in one of the musical acts with Cannon, One night after yet another argument on his late night revelry, his angry wife locked him out of his house. Cannon, who was one of his friends, paid for a room at a local hotel for Bailey, assuring him that his wife would forgive him. Visions in the Night, by Edwin McLean Visions in the Night was inspired by the classic black-and-white detective movies of the 1940s. Filmmakers often used background music that helped to create a suspenseful and mysterious mood. Imagine a misty streetlight seen through evening rain, casting shadows on an empty street... Whether you are a hard-boiled detecrive or a young pianist, you will enjoy the mood created by this piano duet. Blue Danube Blues, by Johann Strauss II, Jerome Kern, and Anne Caldwell Jerome Kem was an American composer of popular music who learned to play the piano from his mother. His parents named him Jerome because they lived near Jerome Park in New York City, one of their favorite places Kem’s contribution is one of the most significant in American popular music theatre. His show songs and theater scores created the bridge between 19th century operetta style and the 20th-century American rnusical. He composed approximately 1,000 songs for more than one hundred stage works over his lifetime Blue Danube Blues is a three-part piece in which Jerome Kern wrote original music for the A and B sections. He quoted the melody of Blue Danube Walez by Johann Strauss Il in the C section which is used in this arrangement. Bringin’ It Home, by Edwin McLean Bringin’ It Home is a fun and lively original composition that offers a mixture ‘of musical genres—it combines a down-home gospel feel in the student solo with swing in the optional teacher part. Also, at key points in the piece, the student gets to play a bluesy solo part. Gospel and blues music continue to be as popular today as they were in the past, and have influenced many musical styles we listen to today, including R&B, bluegrass, rock, pop, and even rap. This piece should be played with a light, relaxed feel, but should never drag. Keep a steady rhythm by listening to the teacher's walking bass line. A-Tisket, A-Tasket Traditional arr.
