Work, Energy and Power

Assignment-5
Work, Energy and Power
Instructions :
Students must write the answers of the following
questions in their exercise books

1. Explain conservative and non-conservative forces. Show

by using a diagram, work is independent of path through
which body is taken but depends on initial and final
states.
2. What is elastic potential energy of a spring? Obtain the
1
relation for elastic P.E 𝑈 = 2 𝑘𝑥 2 , where k is force
constant of spring x is extension or compression
produced in the spring.
3. Two bodies of masses m1 and m2 moving with velocities
u1 and u2 respectively in the same direction collide with
each other elastically; calculate their velocities after the
collision. Discuss what happens when
(i) Both the colliding bodies have the same mass
(ii) One of the bodies is initially at rest
(iii) a light body collides with a heavy body at rest
(iv) a heavy body collides with a light body at rest

2
Numericals :

1. A position dependent force F= (7- 2x+3x2) N acts on a

small abject of mass 2 kg to displace it from x = 0
to x = 5m. Find the work done in joule.
2. A body of mass 5 kg is moving with a momentum of 10 kg-
m/s. A force of 0.2 N acts on it in the direction of motion of
the body for 10 seconds. What is the increase in its kinetic
energy ?
3. A body is attached to the lower end of a vertical spiral
spring and it is gradually lowered to its equilibrium
position. This stretches the spring by a length x. If the same
body attached to the same spring is allowed to fall
suddenly, what would be the maximum stretching in this
case?
4. A particle moves with a velocity 𝑣⃗ = 5𝑖̂ − 3𝑗̂ + 6𝑘̂ m/s
under the influence of a constant force 𝐹⃗ = 10𝑖̂ + 10𝑗̂ +
20𝑘̂ N. What is the instantaneous power applied to the
particle?
5. A big ball of mass M, moving with velocity u strikes a
small ball of mass m, which is at rest. Finally small ball
attains velocity u and big ball v. Then what is the value of v
?
6. A car of mass 400 kg and travelling at 72 kmph crashes into
a truck of mass 4000 kg and travelling at 9 kmph, in the
same direction. The car bounces back at a speed of 18
kmph. Find the speed of the truck after the impact ?

7. A sphere of mass 0.1 kg is attached to a cord of 1m length.

Starting from the height of its point of suspension this
3
sphere hits a block of same mass at rest on a frictionless
table, If the impact is elastic, then the kinetic energy of the
block after the collision ?
8. A ball moving horizontally with speed v strikes the bob of a
simple pendulum at rest. The mass of the bob is equal to
that of the ball. If the collision is elastic the bob will rise to
height h. Find the value of h.
9. A ball of mass 1kg, moving with a velocity of 0.4m /s
collides with another stationary ball. After the collision, the
first ball moves with a velocity of 0.3 m /s in a direction
making an angle of 90o with its initial direction. What is the
momentum of second ball after collision will be (in kg-
m/s)?
10. A block of mass M slides along the sides of a bowl as
shown in the figure. The walls of the bowl are frictionless
and the base has coefficient of friction 0.2. If the block is
released from the top of the side, which is 1.5 m high,
where will the block come to rest? Given that the length of
the base is 15 m.
