I. WHAT HAPPENED?

1. What was stolen from the student?

Her bag was being stolen by them.

2. Do you know of someone in your neighborhood, classmates, or family members who have
experienced the same? Share and write the incident.

It was my mom. It’s when she needed to buy something at a supermarket bringing only a wallet
then a man with a cap suddenly stand beside her and slowly grab my mother’s wallet. My mother didn’t
know what to do so she just stands there due to shock of what happened. Sadly, my mother really lost
her wallet with a large amount of money on it. We’re furious about what happened but mom said just
let it pass and she will be careful next time.

3. What advice can you give to students so this will not happen to them?

Always be attentive to your surroundings and people around you, you don't know who's good
and bad. Incidents happen at times we never expected so it’s good to be prepared every time.

I. WHAT TO KNOW?

1. What is your favorite movie or reading book?

A movie entitled “Five Feet Apart”.

2. Why did you like it?

I like it because it explores a love story amidst the real pain and struggle of having cystic fibrosis
diseases wherein, they needed to maintain a safe distance between them.

3. Which part that made you interested or get attracted?

I got really attracted to the ending of this movie, it is when the male lead bid her goodbyes for
he knew that he doesn’t have enough time to be with the woman he loved by surprising it with beautiful
lights in her hospital room and the last time they saw each other.

1. What is the setting of the story?

 A night in the forest.

2. Who are the characters in the story? Describe each character.

• Cossete – 8 years young girl who was ordered by her guardian’s mistress to fetch a bucket of
water from the forest.
• A man – a strong man who helped Cossete in carrying the bucket full of water while on the
way to Montfermeil, where Cossete lives.

3. What is the little girl doing in the forest at that time of the night? What about the man?

The little girl was there because she was ordered to fetch a bucket of water by her guardian’s
mistress while the man was there to assist the little girl for he promise to her mother who passed away
to take care of her daughter.

4. What is the theme of the story? What are the values that we can learn from the story?

The theme of the story is about poverty. The values we can learn is about giving love and
compassion that are the most important gifts one person can give to another and that always displaying
these qualities should be the most important goal in life.

The five key elements of the story are the plot, character, setting, theme and the conflict.

How important are these when we read stories?

These elements are essential elements keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to
develop in a logical way that the reader can follow.

2. What are the different author’s purpose?

• To inform or teach the reader, the author uses expository writing.

• To relate a story or to recount events, an author uses narrative writing.
• To convince a reader to believe an idea or to take a course of action, the author uses
persuasive writing.
• To tell what something looks like, sounds like, or feels like, the author uses descriptive
writing.

Why should readers need to know the purpose of the author in writing the story?

Learning the author's purpose is an important part of reading comprehension. It also helps the
readers to understand and convey the message of the story. It's sort of like setting a purpose for
comprehension.
ACTIVITY 4: Discovery Tasks

1. Who are the characters in the movie? Describe each character.

My family and I watched a Filipino movie entitled “Kita kita”.

Characters in the movie are:

• Alessandra De Rossi as “Lea” - a Velo taxi tour guide. She suffers an accident which leads to
her being affected by temporary blindness. Her blindness, if not cured in a few weeks, could
become permanent.

• Empoy Marquez at “Tonyo - a Filipino who moved in next door near Lea’s apartment. He is
seen to be friendly and cheerful, bringing Lea different Filipino cuisines everyday even
though she pushes him away.

2. Where and when does the story take place?

The story takes place at Sapporo, Hokkaido in Japan in the year 2017.

3. What happening in the movie? What is the story about?

A film about a working Filipino woman who is Lea, working as travel guide in Sapporo, Japan
who was driven to blindness due to extreme stress and heartache. While living alone, she found comfort
in the company of a fellow Filipino whom served as her eyes during her times of temporary blindness.
Tonyo is also a Filipino who lives right across from Lea. Lea tries her best to ignore him at first because
she is scared of not seeing him, but Tonyo is persistent and is determined to be her friend, using humor
and kindness to make a connection. With every effort that he makes the two gradually become closer. In
an ironic way, becoming blind allows Lea to see the true character of Tonyo. This story is about
perception and about how sometimes we can’t see the real story behind a person. As Lea’s story ends,
we will see Tonyo’s story begin.

4. What is the author’s attitude toward the subject?

The author’s attitude towards the subject is humorous and passionate where the subject uses
humor to make a connection for the both of them to become closer and fell in love in each other.

5. What kind of emotion or feeling do you get after reading the story?

I felt that the best way to truly love someone is to know that one day, they will be gone too
because that is the sad truth about life.

6. Who is your favorite character in the movie? Why?

I really love the character of Tonyo because he has this strong determination to achieve being
friends with her fellow citizen even though she always pushes him away. She always uses his jokes and
strong humor to make the woman laugh that makes her find comfort in the accompany of her fellow
Filipino friend. In the end, they fell in love and made the best story in their lives.

7. What feelings do you share with any characters in the movie?

Feelings of Lea in the ending part of the story when she started learning to love Tonyo but
something unexpected occurs, Tonyo got hit by a vehicle that is the cause of his death and that time,
Lea’s blindness got cured that made him feel so much sorrow, also, I as a viewer felt that. This made me
realize that the best way to truly love someone is to know that one day, they will be gone too.

8. If you gave a chance to ask a character from the movie, who would it be and what would be your
question?
 I would like to ask Lea on what was her feeling having someone into her even she is blind and
she keep pushing him away but still stays to serve as her eyes and still accompany her everywhere.

9. If you were the author, would you change the ending? What changes would you do with the story?

No. I won’t change the ending of this story even though it gives the viewers a heartache because
I believe this is the best part of the story wherein it gives a strong emotion to the viewers that will make
the story hard to forget for them and leaves a mark in peoples mind.
