YALI RLC EA-A Better

Place to be
YALI RLC EA Has been a Great station for Whatever you choose
me to shine -MOJAHED KAMAL ALDIN to do, make sure to
do it to the best of
your ability.

YALI has been a great station for me to

shine. After completing the program
and realizing that YALI RLC EA was the
right place for me to be, I can only
conclude that I had a sense of self-
discovery and found my true path. I
remember my conversation with our
facilitator, Jane Wanjira, where she said,
"Let me show you how to actually get
the most out of the YALI RLC EA
program and any leadership program
you participate in." Listen to me: You
need to put what you have learned
here into practice by sharing it with
others back home.

It was only at that point that I

realized how much responsibility I
would have as a community
leader. I started doing as she said
as soon as I got back to my own
country, and I soon started training
young people

I was able to train about 166 young

people in my country in 4 months
through various organizations
before and after the Sudan War. I
felt that my personality had
advanced to a new level and that
my training abilities had become
professional. In addition to
developing my personality, YALI
served as a kind of passport that
allowed me to enroll in other
advanced programs.

KONECT MAGAZINE | 38
F A C E S O F Y A L I R L C E A - M A G A Z I N E VOL.2

Through it, I was certified by United People Global as an international

leader for sustainable development, and I developed a brand-new
hybrid curriculum for leadership development that combines the
UPG Positive Citizenship, YALI Civic Leadership, and British Social
Innovation curricula.

The best thing that happened to me just three months after I

graduated is something I'll never forget: in April this year, I
nominated myself to be the new chairperson for the year (2023-
2025), and I was elected as the chairperson of the YALI chapter in
Sudan. Given the current conflict in Sudan, this presents a significant
challenge for me. So, as a leader of such a great initiative, I must
represent it well and take action to support Sudanese youth during
this difficult period, because one of the values I learned from YALI is
the flexibility of a leader and adapting to all surrounding
circumstances. As the chapter head, I now work with the rest of the
office to focus on implementing meaningful changes in Sudan
throughout the war. We also stand in solidarity with organizations
that are trying to represent Sudan's youth leaders to the
international community during this conflict.

I am currently beginning my initiative, the Sudan Positive Citizen

Movement - SPCM, as the idea came to me after I discovered the right
track (positive citizen leadership). The initiative's goal is to develop young
people's leadership skills in active citizenship and social change by
helping them come up with creative solutions to problems and launch
social initiatives. Since this is the finest method to assist Sudanese
youths under such extraordinary circumstances, I will officially start
working on this initiative at the start of 2024.

My ambition for the future is to become one of the leaders of the United
Nations in one of the great countries of the world. I also hope to win the
Nobel Prize and become one of Sudan's future ministers so that I can
improve Sudan and help my nation after the war is over. This is because
young people have a right to a life of prosperity and dignity, the ability to
voice their opinions, and the opportunity to lead change in order to
create a new generation that will carry on the tradition of change after
us.
I follow the great leader Nelson Mandela in his steps and believe in his
famous saying: “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and
achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they
do.”

TAKING ACTIONS TO

DECISIONS

I am Roaa Alobeid, an Alumna of

YALI RLC EA cohort 46, Civic
Leadership track. Since the age of
13, my passion for climate action has
been a powerful motivation in my
life. This is because when my
mother got sick, and I was the only
one left to oversee her agricultural
programme, I met this head-on and
cultivated 10,000 trees in villages hit
by hurricanes. This encounter lit up
a match in me to campaign for
climate change. 2017, even though I
am still young, I was appointed
head of the environment office in
the SAMY organisation and headed
a project that was nominated as the
best climate project in Sudan. Youth are future leaders of
our society and current agents
of change who can positively

point.

Nonetheless, my commitment to climate change has not gone

unnoticed. In addition to attending two side events in the Africa
climate summit, I have also been invited to partake in climate
training programmes by UNEP hosted in Germany and the IOM
youth forum held in Kenya, along with high-level meetings hosted
by UNFCCC 2018 taking place in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, I was
lucky to be chosen by YALI RLC EA among thousands of
applicants to attend the leadership training, and It took only 4
months me to also be considered for an additional,
comprehensive program known as the Training of Trainers
programme organized by YALI RLC EA again empowered me with
some skills and knowledge on taking my Leadership abilities at a
higher level.

A year ago, I was nominated as a negotiator at COP27. 2022 I am

this year’s Sudan LCOY/COY18 contact point and part of the Sudan
youth delegation at COP 28. I am also an ambassador of Sudan
Climate at the Y2Y World Bank Group.

My aspirations, however, do not end there. I have created a

regional organization, AfriClimActiv, for African climate activists
who collaborate to research the climate needs of each community
and initiate a marathon concerning climate in every country. So
far, we have held climate marathons in six countries and our
projects include tree planting and advocating for the fight against
global warming. Youth are future leaders of our society and
current agents of change who can positively influence the
environment and counter climate change. We are full of energy,
creativity, and passion to do something about it, and our voices
and actions can make an impact.

Bridging Healthcare Gaps

for African Women
I am Berabose Aline Joyce, YALI RLC
EA Alumni cohort 9, Business track, ,
Alumni chapter of Rwanda. I
embarked on my journey as a young
activist with a profound mission: to
amplify the voices of those
marginalized and often unheard. In
2016, I was privileged to be selected to
join Cohort 9 of the Young African
Leaders Initiative Regional Leadership
Center East Africa (YALI RLC EA), as
young leader who was working with
widows who had survived the
genocide against the Tutsi in 1994 in
Rwanda. Their incredible stories of
resilience inspired me to start my
transformational Journey.

Upon completing my YALI RLC EA

trainings, I transitioned into the role of
a women's rights activist. One of my
most cherished initiatives, the 'Moon
Circle,' was born as part of the African
Dream Movement. Within this
initiative, we created safe spaces
where women could share their
unique struggles. The African Dream
Movement's philosophy centers on
nurturing pan-African young leaders
who celebrate diversity through the
principles of Ubuntu.

In the course of my activism, I co-

founded an initiative aimed at ending
period poverty in Rwanda.
F A C E S O F Y A L I R L C E A - M A G A Z I N E VOL.2
Our efforts encompassed providing free pad
donations to schools, advocating for Sexual and
Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) education,
and fighting to eliminate taboos and stigmas
surrounding menstruation. As part of our
campaign, I co-hosted 'Breaking Silences,'
Rwanda's pioneering podcast dedicated to
shattering the silence and shame associated
with women's experiences.

Additionally, I proudly joined the Rwanda

Women's Alliance, and my journey included
initiating a mental health fund to offer crucial
support to women navigating their mental
health journeys. This project named 'Urumuri
Women,' also served as a platform for
documenting the stories of women's rights
defenders like myself who stand at the forefront
of the battle for gender equality.

My work and commitment led to a significant

honor: inclusion in 'HerStory,' a publication that
celebrated the contributions of 32 courageous
women to Rwanda's gender-conscious nation.
The momentum continued, and I received
recognition and awards such as the Queen's
Young Leader Associate, the Clinton Global
Initiative Leader, and the Concern Global Youth
Ambassador role. As a Young Diplomat, I also
significantly facilitated international relations for
the #MiddleEastPeace process.

Throughout my journey in the women's sector

and development, I identified a critical gap in
women's health. Teaming up with my co-
founder from Kenya, Chibubu Nyiro, we
ventured into our most passionate endeavour
yet - 'LUNA,' a Femtech startup. LUNA is
dedicated to providing healthcare and wellness
solutions, services, and products to women
across the African continent. Our mission is to
bridge the gap in women's healthcare from
their first period to menopause. Since its
inception, LUNA has conducted over 170
consultations, and our dedication to improving
women's access to quality healthcare remains
steadfast.

MAKING WAVES

FOR CHANGE IN

KENYA
My name is Abby Chebet, a YALI RLC EA Alumni
Cohort 46 from Kenya.. As a young and
dedicated leader I proudly wear many hats - an
award-winning author, a dedicated activist, and a
champion of Sustainable Development Goal 4,
which focuses on quality education. My academic
background includes a bachelor's degree in
commerce with a finance specialization from the
Multimedia University of Kenya. Currently, I'm in
the process of pursuing a post-graduate diploma
in technical trainer education at the Kenya School
of TVET. In my professional life, I serve as a
practicing finance officer with a promising career
ahead, with aspirations to further expand my
horizons. Additionally, I'm delighted to be part of
the YALI RLC EA, cohort 46.

One of my most significant endeavors is as the

Founder and Executive Director of The Lady's
Heart Organization. Our mission is to champion
quality education in the grassroots of Kenya,
firmly believing that education knows no age
restrictions.

To achieve this, I've joined forces with university

and college students who share a deep desire to
drive positive change in their communities. We
provide them with training on the importance of
making a positive impact, and they serve as
accountability groups for one another.

However, our mission doesn't end at education.

We're passionate about imparting knowledge
about menstrual health and making menstrual
products accessible to young girls and women.
Doing so, we aim to break down the barriers and
stigmas surrounding this aspect of women's
health. Additionally, we advocadte for climate
justice and actively engage in community
dialogues to emphasize the significance of
education in building a sustainable and equitable
future.
F A C E S O F Y A L I R L C E A - M A G A Z I N E VOL.2

My transformative experience with YALI RLC

EA inspired me to take concrete action. I made
a resolution to establish a workshop for
teenage mothers, where they can acquire
practical skills to secure their livelihoods.
We've taken the first steps by setting up a
temporary workshop in Bomet County, Kenya.
It's here that we've provided hairdressing
equipment, supported by the Jumuiya
Women Fund, benefiting 25 teenage mothers
who had to leave school. Our goal is to
empower these women with diversified skills
that will lead to sustainable, long-term
livelihoods.

In addition to my social impact work, I'm also

an author. My book, "The Flow of Life," delves
into the challenges women and girls face
regarding menstrual health in East Africa. It's a
call to action and has earned me nominations
for prestigious awards, including the 2023
East Africa Youth Awards, the 2020 Zuri
Awards as a young achievers honoree, and
the 2019 SDG 4 Ambassador of the Year in
WHDO Awards.

Also, I'm also an entrepreneur with a social

conscience, running an online enterprise
named Fabi Cake and Gift House.
Furthermore, I'm actively involved in creating
innovative solutions to address local problems.
Together with others, I co-founded Virdismart
Global, a project that created East Africa's first
smart recycling bin, using cutting-edge
technology to sort waste and incentivize
recycling. We even piloted this initiative at
Coca-Cola Beverages Africa, demonstrating
my commitment to sustainability and
innovation.

Even during the challenging times of the

COVID-19 pandemic; I designed and donated
automated handwashing stations to various
markets, including the Ongata Rongai open-
air market. This reflects my steadfast belief in
sustainable problem-solving techniques as a
means to achieve lasting, sustainable
livelihoods for all.

HOW WARSAMA BROADENED THE

UNDERSTANDING OF LEADERSHIP
THOUGH YALI RLC EA
Warsama Omar, an alumnus of YALI RLC EA', Cohort
43, Public Management Track, has undergone a
significant transformation in his perspective on
leadership. Prior to his participation in the YALI RLC
EA program, he held a limited view of leadership,
associating it with specific roles and categories.
However, his YALI RLC EA experience has
substantially broadened his understanding of
leadership.

Engaging in the program online, Warsama found

himself immersed in a dynamic community of fellow
leaders and distinguished facilitators. This virtual
journey allowed him to gain knowledge and discover
the diverse range of leadership styles that exist. The
interactions within the online community, including
group activities and knowledge sharing, were the
most supportive of his development.

Warsama, with a background in environmentalism,

has always been deeply committed to addressing
the environmental challenges many African
countries face, such as waste management, air
pollution, and wastewater concerns. Through his
local organisation, he collaborates with other leaders
to educate the community, with a particular focus on
the youth, as they represent the future generation.

The Training of Trainers (TOT) program, provided by

the YALI RLC EA centre, also played an invaluable role
in equipping him with the skills and knowledge
required to effectively carry out his mission. This
program has empowered him to inspire and educate
others about the importance of environmental
stewardship and sustainability.

Warsama testify that his participation to YALI RLC EA

Programme has immensely contributed to who is
now and who is becoming in the future. He Believes
that Investing in young African leaders is a Cohort 9-Business Track

"I am hungry for change,

Special Online Africa Wide, Cohort 1

One of the most significant takeaways
has been the profound understanding
of my strengths and areas in need of
improvement. Self-awareness has
become a cornerstone of my
leadership style, enabling me to be a
more effective leader in every facet of
my life, from the classroom to my role
as a communication chair.
The power of connections cannot be
understated in my YALI journey. The
Regional Leadership Center East Africa
(YALI RLC EA) allowed me to connect
with incredible individuals from
various African countries. Through the
program, I formed friendships,
collaborations, and mentorships that
have expanded my horizons and
opened doors to opportunities that
were once beyond my reach.
I've learned that leadership is
adaptable. There is no one-size-fits-all
formula for leading, and YALI RLC EA
exposed me to an array of leadership
styles. It encouraged me to adapt my
approach depending on the situation,
emphasizing that flexibility and
adaptability are essential qualities for
any leader.

Joining YALI's vibrant family in 2022

as part of Cohort 44 in the Business
and Entrepreneurship track felt like
stepping into a new dimension.
Every afternoon, virtual classrooms
buzzed with the collective learning
of YALI fellows led by experts and
successful entrepreneurs. Microsoft
Teams became our digital
campfire, crackling with the
familiar refrains of "Hi, mute
yourself?" and "Can you hear me?"
In this digital space, I, the lone
fellow navigating the program with
a hearing impairment, might have
appeared a little reserved or shy.

After graduation, the opportunity to
participate in the YALI Trainer of Trainers
(TOT) program in Kenya reignited my passion
and equipped me with best practices to
elevate my work. "To whom much is given,
much is expected," the saying resonated,
urging me to leverage the YALI RLC EA
program's lessons for greater impact.

My focus lies in youth employment,

particularly for people living with disabilities,
a vulnerable group battling immense
unemployment odds. YALI RLC EA Program
fueled the growth of my organization,
empowering us to design new programs,
build lasting networks, and create
opportunities where barriers once stood.

One pivotal success was our two-month

virtual training for disability leaders in
Uganda in partnership with Professor Wendy

with immense pride. We launched the

YALI RLC EA REJECTIONS

My name is BASEKA Vianney Saidi,

and my journey with YALI RLC EA
began in 2019 as part of cohort 39
in the Business and
Entrepreneurship track. Looking
back at YALI RLC EA, I can't help
but think about my struggles
before joining.

YALI RLC EA came into my life like

a lifeline when I felt like I was
falling off a big mountain. This
program marked a fresh start for
me. You see, before YALI RLC EA,
my disability, losing an arm, made
people doubt my abilities. It was
tough. I tried applying for jobs in
94 companies without success,
even with a university degree.
Rejection after rejection felt like
building a wall of doubt around
myself. They made it seem like my
disability was a permanent "no" to
my dreams. I was drowning in a
sea of job applications going
nowhere.

Then, I stumbled upon a link about

the YALI RLC EA program online
and decided to try it. Luckily, I got
selected. At YALI RLC EA, they
didn't focus on my limitations but
saw my potential.

Arriving in Kenya was a turning point; it was a chance

for me to show that I could be more than what people
thought. In Nairobi, everything was new. For someone
like me from a humble background, taking a flight
seemed like a dream from my village's point of view.
Meeting diverse and motivating people in Nairobi
during YALI RLC EA was a game-changer. Learning
from each other opened my eyes.
While at YALI RLC, I learned about the Transformation
Fund and applied for it, securing $5000. That
opportunity shifted my perspective personally and
professionally. With the funds, I decided I wouldn't beg
for a seat at someone else's table; instead, I'd build my
own and provide jobs.

Despite the initial hopelessness from losing my arm, I

made it happen. I'm the CEO of UJEAD AKEZA, making
valuable products for the community, including
medical soaps. I employ over 37 people, 21 women and
16 men, who are well-paid and content with their
families. I'm no longer the person who feared
challenges. Today, I get invited to different events
nationally and internationally. Without YALI, I wouldn't
be where I am today.

YALI RLC is like family; they provided something even

my parents couldn't. I'm grateful for the opportunities
YALI RLC EA gave me. Giving back to the community is
fulfilling, and having trained 1245 people in soap-
making is a source of pride for me. In addition, being
part of the TOT Cohort1 program improved my skills and
knowledge to cascade the training in my community. I
am now a certified Trainer of Trainers. Thanks to YALI

HOW I EMBRACED
MY DISABILITY AS AN OPPORTUNITY

I am Zebib, joined the YALI

member of Cohort 45 in
Civic Leadership.

I was fortunate enough to

have spent my childhood in
a supportive family, so that
I never felt discriminated
just because of my
disability. Despite various
difficulties that my parents
encountered, they infused
in me the qualities of
strong will and flexibility,
encouraging me to look at
my disability as advantage
rather than a disadvantage.

During my journey, I have

been closely engaged with
different disability rights
organizations, child welfare
groups, and gender
equality organizations. I
have always committed
myself to make difference
as a volunteer and serve at
the Youth Charitable
Organization (YCO) and
held several positions at
Ethiopian Centre for
Development of Disabilities
(ECDD) .
F A C E S O F Y A L I R L C E A - M A G A Z I N E VOL.2

As a certified leader with United People Global and a moderator at

Adolescent and Youth Health Week, I have facilitated discussions on
important issues like youth leadership, health concerns and the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing more on Quality
Education (SDG 4) and Gender Equality (SDG 5). Also, being a
Certified T.O.T. for the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission has
enabled me to cascade very important training on Disability and
Inclusion, which I am passionate about.

Currently, I am an advocate for persons with disabilities, and I try to

empower many persons with disabilities by training, sharing
opportunities and creating a support system where persons with
disabilities use their disabilities to show that it is another possibility if
we transform what we have into impactful deeds. My aim is clear: To
fight ceaselessly for disability inclusion and to work for a world in
which persons with disabilities can lead their lives with dignity and
rights guaranteed without restriction.

In each role I fulfil, I embody the dream of an equal society where

diversity prevails and walls are pulled down. In my path, I am
unwavering in my resolve to raise the voices of those often not heard
and towards a future where everyone can thrive, irrespective of
ability.

In 2022, I valued the chance I got with YALI RLC EA. I was happy the
day I received the acceptance letter since I understood how rare
those opportunities are for disabled people in Ethiopia. Being part of
YALI RLC EA has been a transformative experience, and I am always
thankful for being part of the great family of leaders. Also, being part
of the YALI RLC ToT Program boosted my skills, allowing me to
transfer knowledge and cascade the training in my community.

With this knowledge, I lived every second and grew through the
program and the opportunities that enabled me to engage with such
a great cohort of 45 mentors. I am also committed to mentoring the
youth with disabilities who aspire to be like me in the world.

Solomon's early desire to help others sparked a journey of

devotion and collaboration. During his university years, he
engaged in various organizations, notably the Eritrean community
and blood donation drives, where he learned the value of
cooperation and community service.

Solomon's desire to make a difference prompted him to

collaborate closely with non-governmental organizations such as
UNHCR, DRC, and Doctors Without Borders. His work with
ERUGSA, a refugee-led organization, demonstrated his leadership
abilities as he tirelessly advocated for refugees' rights and access
to education.

Throughout his life, Solomon has championed the cause of

refugee education, inspiring young people to pursue their dreams
despite adversity. His mentorship initiatives through the DRC
Mentorship program in Addis Ababa demonstrate his
commitment to developing future leaders among Eritrean youth.

Utilizing skills gained from the YALI RLC EA Program, Salomon's

leadership extends beyond mentoring; he actively participates in
campaigns and events addressing critical issues refugee
communities face, from healthcare advocacy to preventing illegal
migration and inspiring refugees toward higher education.

The quote by Marianne Williamson inspires Solomon: "In

every community, there is work to be done. In every
nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is
the power to do it". This quote motivates his
commitment to driving positive change.
