Competency and volcanic eruptions (S6ES-IVa-1)
Quarter 4th
Learning  Knowledge: Identify the causes of earthquake Week 1
Objectives Describe how faulting causes earthquake No.
Explain how earthquake occurs Day 1
 Skills : Develop a plan to prepare for natural calamities
 Attitudes: Demonstrate awareness on the natural hazards of
earthquake
Topic Earthquakes Duration:
50 mins.
Resources Needed 30 toothpicks, 30 marshmallows,

PROCEDURE:
Element of
Suggested Activities
the Plan
Awareness  Video presentation on the Surigao earthquake on February 10, 2017
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Surigao_earthquake

Activity  Pupils perform the activity on “ Earthquake in the classroom “

https://www.teachengineering.org/activities/view/cub_natdis_lesson03_activity1

Analysis  What cause the design to fell easily?

 Which design can withstand the waves applied?
 How does faulting cause earthquake?
 Name other possible cause of earthquake.
Abstraction  What causes earthquake?
Earthquakes are caused by faulting.
 How does faulting cause earthquake?
An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. Stresses in the earth's outer layer
push the sides of the fault together. Stress builds up and the rocks slips suddenly,
releasing energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that
we feel during an earthquake.
Application  Make an earthquake hazard plan to develop awareness on the occurrences of natural
calamities. This is done by groups for certain period of time.
Assessment Fill in the blanks with the correct answer to make the idea correct. Wrong spelling is
definitely wrong.
1. Epicenter is found directly ___________ the focus ( above )
2. It is a break in the Earth’s crust where significant movement occurs. _______ ( faults )
3. As vehicles move away from the focus, the intensity __________ ( decreases )
4. What intensity is capable of destroying all man-made structures? _______ ( IX )
5. The movement of the fault’s plane which is capable of producing a tsunami.____ (
downward )

Assignment Make a picture and story show on the effects of earthquake.

https://philnews.ph/2013/.../bohol-cebu-7-2-earthquake-october-15-2013-photos-vide...

Activity  Group activity ( picture board game )

Using the pictures in the story show given as previous assignment, pupils will perform
the picture board game. Let them classify the pictures based on their similarities and
label them.
Expected labels:
Loss of lives Human Landslides Fires Flash floods Tsunamis
structures

Analysis  What happens to the earth’s surface as a result of earthquake?

 Which effect of earthquake has the greatest impact to people? to the environment?
 How does earthquake affects people’s lives?
 Why is there fire after an earthquake?
Abstraction  What are the harmful effects as a result of earthquake?
1. Loss of lives 2. damage to human structures ( buildings, roads, and bridges )
3. Flash floods 4. Landslides 5. Ground rupture 6. liquefaction 7. tsunamis
Application  Pupils will role play for five minutes showing one of the harmful effects of earthquake.

Assessment  Pupils will choose one of the following task to do:

A. Poster making that shows preparedness resolution on earthquake.
B. Slogan about earthquake hazard plan.

Learning  Knowledge: Explain how volcanic eruptions occur Week 2
Objectives Identify the two types of volcanic eruption No.
Describe the cause/s of volcanic eruption Day 3
 Skills : Develop awareness on the causes of volcanic eruption
 Attitudes: Demonstrate awareness on the natural hazards of volcanic
eruption
Topic Volcanic Eruption Duration:
50 mins.
Resources Needed Clay, Elmer flask, baking soda, vinegar, dish washing, food coloring ( red and yellow )

PROCEDURE:

Suggested Activities
the Plan
Awareness  Forming word puzzle
V E C A T I __ __ __ __ __ __ ( ACTIVE )
A volcano that has had at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years.
F E F U S I V E __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ ( EFFUSIVE )
A type of eruption where lava flows like a thick, sticky liquid, or explosive where
fragmented lava explodes out of a vent.
P O L X E S I V E __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __( EXPLOSIVE )
A type of eruption where fragmented rock may be accompanied by ash and gases.
Activity  Group activity :
Volcanic eruption simulation
 Pupils will conduct an experiment on simulating volcanic eruption. Let them follow the
instructions/procedure found in the activity sheets. Encourage each group to ask
questions for clarification before doing the activity.
.

Analysis  What makes it behave that way?

 What is the role of the dish washing soap ?
 Why are bubbles produced in the experiment?
 How does chemical reaction happened during the experiment?
 What gases was produced during the chemical reaction?
Abstraction  How do volcanic eruptions occur?
Deep within the Earth it is so hot that some rocks slowly melt and become a thick
flowing substance called magma. Because it is lighter than the solid rock around it, magma
rises and collects in magma chambers. Eventually, some of the magma pushes through
vents and fissures in the Earth's surface.
 What causes volcanic eruption?
Magma rises through cracks or weaknesses in the Earth's crust. When this pressure is
released, eg as a result of plate movement, magma explodes to the surface causing causing
volcanic eruption. The lava from the eruption cools to form new crust. Over time, after
several eruptions, the rock builds up and a volcano forms.
 Name the two types of volcanic eruption.
Effusive and Volcanic eruptions

3
Application  Role play on the natural hazard plan of volcanic eruption.

Assessment  Video presentation on the eruption of Mount Kanlaon at

cnnphilippines.com/regional/.../Negros-Oriental-Kanlaon-Volcano-erupts-Phivolcs.ht...
Answer the following questions:
1. What type of volcano is Mount Canlaon? ( stratovolcano )
2. When did Mount Canlaon recently erupted? ( June 18, 2016 )
3. How many times it erupted since 1819? ( 30 times )
4. How did Mount Canlaon erupted last March 29, 2016?
( It produced a volcanic plume 1500 meters above the crater and a "booming sound" was
heard in some barangays near the volcano. According to the police department of Canlaon
City, several fire balls, which were coming from the crater of the volcano, started to flow
following a booming sound and causing a bush fire. PHIVOLCS issued alert level number 1.
No casualties were reported. )
5. Name the three hot springs found in the slopes of Mount Canlaon.

Assignment  Bring the following materials tomorrow:

1/8 sized illustration board, construction papers ( all colors in the world ), scissor, ruler,
pencil, glue and pentel pens.
