1 General Advice for Using the HLV

Before operation the measuring system has to be checked up on visible transport damage.
The device is built and checked according to safety regulations for electronic measuring systems and has
left the factory in perfect condition. To keep this condition and to ensure a safe operation, you have to fol-
low the advice and warnings of this operating instruction.
Before using the power supply unit check if the parameters, which can be found on the unit, are compati-
ble with the available power supply.
Keep the quartz probe's connecting plug clean and dry to maintain the high insulation resistance. The in-
put jack of the piezo probe must not be touched and has to be kept absolutely clean. In case of necsityes
use only extremely pure cleaners as benzine and a non- fluffing paper. While not in use, apply the protec-
tive cap for the jack which is at the HLV. Do also cover the plug of the quartz probe using the protective
cap.
For revolution counting and Top Dead Centre (TDC) setting install and connect the TDC sensor.

4 Usage

In the following have a small impression which possibilities are available to the user of this electronic indica-
tor.
The HLV 2005 MK replaces the mechanical indicator. Several pressure sequences are recorded. Then a
graph and maximum pressure are shown on the LCD screen. The graph can be expanded, compressed and
panned. Additionally, the cursor can be used to get the values of each point of the pressure graph. So a first
analysis of the results can be done on the spot. 280 measurement series can be saved and sent to PC via
serial port after finishing measuring. The electronic indicator is known for its easy menu-based user interface.
Calibration and settings are checked automatically . After switching on, the device checks itself and important
hardware components to provide best measuring reliability. Before each measuring, the measuring section is
calibrated.
The HLV is fitted with a real time clock, making it possible to document pressure records with date and time.

7.2 General Information for Operation

Before operation of the HLV 2005 MK check the integrated batteries. For this press the Options key after
having switched the HLV On. After long storage the capacity can drop. In this case, charge the batteries be-
fore first measuring with the supplied charger for at least 3 hours. To do so, connect the charger's plug with
the corresponding jack of the HLV.
After this, connect the probe by means of it's FISCHER plug with the HLV 2005MK.

Connecting the plug Locked plug

Move the sleeve of the plug towards the HLV jack, to lock the connection.

Remove plug

To remove the probe, unlock by shifting the sleeve away from the HLV jack, then pull out the plug.
Note, that both – plug and jack of the HLV – have to be kept clean under all circumstances.
After connection to the HLV, the Thompson adapter with integrated quartz probe must be screwed onto the
indicator valve of the cylinder to be monitored.

7.3 Installation of the Top Dead Centre (TDC) Sensor

reflective light barrier

The TDC sensor works optically and also renders the rpm Transition of dark-bright on the reflection tape is
detected as TDC. To find the exact location as where to place the reflecting tape, do as follows:

First the engine must be turned to the TDC of cylinder 1.

Stick a reflecting tape (3) onto the flywheel (1) so that the dark-bright transition happens at TDC when the
flywheel moves in the right sense of rotation.
Best results are obtained with high contrast, e.g. overlapping dark-bright-dark tape.
For easy calibration a red LED is integrated into the sensor. On the back of the TDC sensor an engraved ar-
row shows the direction of rotation.

The TDC sensor (2) must be connected to the HLV using the enclosed cable.
Sensor (2) and reflecting mark (3) are ready to be calibrated now. The distance between them should be 5 to
30 mm. Use the longer distance for slow revolutions, the shorter distance for faster ones.

9 von 33
PRÄZISIONSMESSTECHNIK BAEWERT GMBH

The dark-bright transition of the mark has to be exactly in the middle of the TDC sensor when the engine is at
TDC. The LED is permanently on in this case.

It flashes red in case of rotating flywheel – everytime the TDC mark passes. It flickers permanently followed
by short breaks in case of higher revolutions. It shows the TDC that way (only in case of activated HLV in
TDC menu).
The sensor is adjusted correctly when the engine rpm is the same as the HLV displays.
If no rpm is shown or it is too high, the distance between TDC sensor and flywheel must be corrected until
the figure is correct (no rpm -> smaller distance, too high rpm -> higher distance). In some cases the angle
between sensor and flywheel may need some adaptation.

After successful installation the sensor must be firmly fitted to the engine's frame to ensure operation's reli-
ability and safety for the staff.
For this a special bracket for the TDC sensor is offered as optional equipment. It has to be adjusted only
once. Thereafter fitting and removing of the TDC sensor iw very easy.
Using the menu OT it can be checked if the TDC sensor has been positioned correctly.

PRÄZISIONSMESSTECHNIK BAEWERT GMBH

Interrupting light barrier

The TDC sensor works optically and also renders the rpm Transition. The functioning of this sensor is similar
to the reflection mark sensor. The difference is that reflecting marks are replaced by a bolt. It interrupts the
light beam of the barrier on each turn of the flywheel.

When fitting the barrier to the engine, care has to be taken to avoid the bolt touching the barrier's body, but
still immersing deep enough (about 1.5 cm) into the barrier's gap.
First the engine must be turned to the TDC of cylinder no.1.
Fitting a bolt at the flywheel so that the transition through the light barrier sensor happens at TDC when the
flywheel moves in the right sense of rotation.

There are 2 possibilities of fitting the bolt at the flywheel:

1. Fitting the bolt in front of the flywheel:

11 von 33
PRÄZISIONSMESSTECHNIK BAEWERT GMBH

2. Fitting the bolt in side of the flywheel:

Crank Angle Encoder

He can be used at 2-stroke engines with revolutions per minute under 100. This crank crank angle en-
coder has a dissolving of 1°. He gives in addition the TDC- signal.

The assembly is carried out according to detailed plans for the respective engine.

Fit the crank angle transmitter to the free end of the engine using a flexible, non-twisting coupling. Assembly
has to be done as per detailed drawings of the engine in question.

7.4.1 Sensitivity

Caution !
Make only changes to this menu if a new quartz probe shall be connected to the
HLV. Do not change the presettings of the manufacturer.
Every unauthorised change of the calibration values leeds to measuring errors.

Each quartz probe has its own sensitivity.

This value has to be entered into the device before connecting a new sensor.
Press Cal. key.

===Sensitivity====
E [pC/bar] = 42,5

In case of need, the sensor sensitivity has to be input and confirmed by pressing Enter.
After that, a second confirmation appears, for security reasons:
Save changes pressing <Enter> key.
The calibration can only be changed by using this key. The previous value is kept if any other key is
pressed.
The HLV 2005 MK uses this value from thereone. The calibration is kept even after switching the device off.
Every measurement series and the corresponding calibration value is saved internally.
You do not have to consider plus/minus sign.
You can exit this function without saving by pressing Esc.

7.4.2 Measurement of Revolutions using the TDC Sensor

Select with OT key.

==rev counter==

n = 1360.2 rpm

The number of revolutions is displayed (e.g. 1 360.2 rpm) if the TDC sensor is in a correct position (red LED
flashes regularly at TDC depending on the rpm) and well connected with the TDC cable.

Troubleshooting while TDC Installation:

No rpm displayed:

==rev counter==

no tdc-signal

 TDC sensor not connected

 TDC sensor wrongly positioned
Reflecting mark detached from the flywheel while engine was running.
Incorrect rpm displayed:
Too high rpm: unsmooth flywheel’s surface, which resemble TDC marks. In this case, increase
distance between sensor and mark (e.g. 25 to 30mm)
Too low rpm: TDC mark is not always recognised; reduce distance between mark and sensor

If the change of distance between sensor and TDC mark is not successful, find a different place for the mark
on the flywheel, paint the flywheel black or use black adhesive tape (see 7.3).
Make sure that neither the sensor nor the reflection mark are influenced by scattered light.
Leave menu using the Esc key.

Here the minimum rpm of the engine can be set. You can also set the automatic mean computing of the 10
recorded revolutions and you can define if the rpm is to be found automatically or has to be entered manually
in case of non connected TDC sensor.
The minimum revolutions entered always have to correspond to the minimum rpm of the measured engine. If
the number of the rpm is set too high, there will be no rpm detection by the TDC sensor. If it is set too low a
value will be found but scanning time for rpm evaluation take longer than necessary. If dealing with several
different engines, always the speed of the slowest one is to be entered.
The mean of the combustion pressure graph can be determined directly after measuring by setting “ Mean
On”. This works with connected TDC sensor only.
The rpm can be found even without a connected sensor, if the automatic revolution counting is selected in
the menu "Revolution Measuring". Note again that the minimum rpm must be lower or as high as the mini-
mum engine rpm. Else, rpm are to be set manually before starting a session.

• Key 4 – Memory Partitioning

The HLV 2005MK can store 280 measuring series. You can chose how many series should be reserved for
single cylinder mode.

====settings====
memory partitioning

single test series

(0-280)
number of = 80

If the default 80 is not changed, 200 cylinder will be left for the complete engine mode. Putting in "0" means
that the single cylinder mode is not available . This will be notified if the mode is changed with the Mode key.

After confirming the new number of single measure series with Enter a message tells that all present meas-
uring values will be erased.
At the memory partitioning the sensitivity is setted to the presetting value:

====settings====
memory partitioning

sensitivity
E[pC/bar]=42,5

If the presetting value is not equal to valid calibration value (calibration sheet) he must be changed to the cali-
bration value
If you confirm again, the new memory partition will be built and all data will be erased. You can abort with
Esc, leaving previous data unchanged.

7.4.10 Illumination

The Light key activates the backlight of the LCD in case of unsatisfactory light conditions.
The illumination is a power consumer, in detriment of the batteries' capacity, shortening the available
measuring time. Consequently, it should be used only if imperative.

7.4.11 Static Measure

This version of the HLV2005Mk allows the quick and easy calibration of the quartz probe with pressure
scales or to check the accuracy of the measuring system.

The constant pressure created by a pressure reference (e.g. pressure scales) can be measured with this
function and the accuracy of the measuring system can be determined .
At transgression of the permitted measuring inaccuracy of 1% FS, the HLV with sensor has to be cali-
brated by the manufacturer, an examining laboratory or a classification company (e.g. German Lloyd).

NOTE: Do not work with external power supply during calibration to prevent
possible interference via power connection.

Activate function with F1 key.

===stat. Measure===

0 bar

The current pressure is displayed. It is updated continuously. Use the arrow keys ↑ and ↓ for decreasing
or increasing the accuracy. A bar display shows it at the bottom. A short bar shows normal, a longer
shows higher accuracy of the static measuring. If the bar becomes too long, an overflow will happen.
Press ↓ to reduce the accuracy and reset with GR.
Reset by means of GR key has to be done prior each static measurement.

Note:
You can only measure the difference between start and end pressures if using quartz probes.
They are not able to render absolute pressure values!

9.Trouble Shooting

Device asks for rpm input at measuring start:

• TDC sensor not connected or no TDC signal available

⇒ Connect TDC sensor or reposition it
• The initialised minimum rpm is too high

Only one pressure value (pmax) is displayed after measuring a cylinder:

(pmaxmin and pmaxmax are missing)
• Indicator valve not, or only partially open, or blocked
• Pressure sensor not correctly connected to the HLV
• Pressure sensor defective, or cable broken

Pressure values not high enough:

• Indicator valve out of order, or not completely opened, or blocked
• Sensor sensitivity set too high ⇒ Compare value (key Cal.) with the one stated on the data sheet (sen-
sitivity at operating temperature).

Pressure values too high:

• Sensor sensitivity set too low ⇒ Compare value (key Cal.) with the one stated on the data sheet (sen-
sitivity at operating temperature).

After measuring at the cylinder, rpm is not displayed:

• Wrong input of the minimum rpm in the HLV ⇒ correct value in the menu Options
• TDC sensor does not send signals ⇒ check, or reposition the TDC sensor

TDC Mark is not correctly placed in the graph:

• Wrong firing order set during engine initialisation ⇒ correct firing order
• In case of incorrect position of the TDC signal at cylinder 1, reposition TDC mark

After measuring the last measured cylinder is missing:

• The data were not saved with Enter after measuring the last cylinder

Device switches off while measuring:

• Batteries are empty ⇒ Charge batteries with supplied charger for about 3 hours (Do not use otherun-
known batteries!). September 06
