basic functional and structural units in a living organism

groups of cells of similar structure working together to perform the same function

made from different tissues working together to perform specific functions

groups of organs with related functions, working together to perform body functions

individual plants or animals by all organs and systems working together

Organ systems Organs Tissue examples

Shoot system Leaf, stem, flower fruit, - Epidermis mesophyll
- xylem
- phloem
Root system Root, tuber - Xylem
- Phloem
- Ground tissue
Digestive system Esophagus, stomach, small - Muscle
& large intestine - Connective
- Nerve
- epithelial
Circulatory system Heart, veins, arteries - Muscle
- Connective
- Nerve
- Epithelial
Immune system Thymus, spleen - Bone marrow
Respiratory system Trachea, bronchi, lungs - Connective
- Muscle
- epithelial

- epithelial
Excretory system Liver, kidney, skin, lungs - Muscle
- Connective
- Nerve
- Epithelial
Nervous system Brain, spinal cord - nerve
Reproductive system Ovary, cervix, uterus, - Muscle
vagina, testes, penis - Connective
- Nerve
- Erectile

Epithelium
• A thin layer of tissue
• Different types of epithelium form the internal lining of the windpipe, air passages, food canal, etc
and protect these organs from physical/chemical damage

Smal tube
• Tubules carry liquids from one part of an organ to another

One muscle cell

• Forms a sheet of muscle tissue. Blood vessels, nerve fibers and connective tissue will also be
present
• Contractions help to move food along the food canal or close down small blood vessels

Gland
• Cells make chemicals, which are released into the central space and carried away by a tubule
• Hundreds of cell groups would form a gland like the salivary gland
