2. PURPOSE

2.1 The Purpose of this document is to explain the inspections with Overlay.

3. PERSONS AFFECTED

3.1 This document is applicable to all:

3.1.1 All Tenaris Premium Connections Manufacturing Services Personnel.
3.1.2 Facilities licensed to thread TenarisHydril connections.

4. REFERENCES

4.1 Not Applicable.

5. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

5.1 Definitions and Abbreviations are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0001.

5.2 Overlay / Mylar: Piece of transparency paper where the profile and tolerances of a specific part of
the connection (seal, thread, torque shoulder, groove, etc) and their tolerances has been plotted.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES

6.1 Responsibilities are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0002.

7. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

7.1 Personnel qualification is defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0003.

8. PROCEDURES
The use of overlays is one of the primary methods for the control of TenarisHydril Premium joints.
The use of overlays cannot be replaced by other gauging methods, and the overlay shall be used
to verify only the parameters specified in the Inspection Reports and/or Inspection Procedure.
The overlays are a controlled document and shall be requested to TenarisHydril thru the
Licensees Assistance Internet Portal. Licensee shall verify on the Internet the overlay under its
possession is the latest revision.
The overlays shall be correctly rolled for storage. Folding the overlay will damage the paper
increasing its opacity and thus making it obsolete for its use. Overlays shall be protected from
direct sunlight or any other heat source that may produce changes on its dimensions.
Each overlay has a set of gauging points with a calibrated distance. In case of detecting damage
on the Overlay (due to direct contact with sunlight, heat or improper folding) the distance between
the gauging points shall be inspected with a ruler or caliper as to assure no deformation has
occurred. If the value of the measurement differs from the one specified on the overlay in more

than 1.0 mm, the Overlay can not be used and TenarisHydril shall be contacted for a
replacement.
TenarisHydril overlays are designed for use on optical projectors. Do not use the overlays for
stylus tracing (i.e. using a Contour-Reader) unless otherwise specified in the overlay.
The optical projector shall be clean, in good general state and properly calibrated.
TenarisHydril overlays are designed to be used at 10X, 20X and 50X. Check the overlay for the
magnification prior to inspection of samples. The correct lens shall be fitted to be in accordance
with the overlay.
Mold material utilized for the optical comparison shall be ReproRubber , Cerrolow 117 , or other
material capable of maintaining the dimensional stability required. In all cases, the final mold
used for optical comparison shall be less than one-eighth (1/8) inch thick, and parallel to the pipe
axis to avoid distortions.

8.1 Inspection
Inspection frequency shall be in accordance to the corresponding inspection procedure.
Install the correct magnification (10X, 20X, 50X) lens in the optical projector.
Adjust the mold to the bench vise of the projector and focus the screen.
Place the Overlay against the screen by aligning the points printed on the Overlay with the
shadow of the mold projected on the screen. (Special care shall be taken to place the
mold/piece/insert in the correct side of the overlay. This is indicated on the overlay with a legend
or a set of lines /////////).
Verify that the shadow is within the tolerances printed on the Overlay.

8.2 Acceptance / Rejection Criteria

Overlay Inspection is acceptable if the complete mold-part shadow is within or touches in any
manner the limits / tolerances lines printed on the Overlay.

Any pin or box connection that contains a form that is outside the limits / tolerance lines (not
touching) printed on the overlay shall be rejected.

8.3 Records
The result of these inspections shall be recorded on the IR.
The mold specimen(s) or a picture of the mold properly identified shall be maintained as a record
for a minimum of 6 months.

9.1 Not Applicable.
