2. PURPOSE

2.1 The Purpose of this document is to explain how the measurement of the Thread Ovality is
performed using a MRP gage.

3. PERSONS AFFECTED

3.1 This document is applicable to all:

3.1.1 All Tenaris Premium Connections Manufacturing Services Personnel.
3.1.2 Facilities licensed to thread TenarisHydril connections.

4. REFERENCES

4.1 Not Applicable.

5. DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS

5.1 Definitions and Abbreviations are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0001.
5.2 Free state variation also known as ovality, is the distortion of a part after completion of the
manufacturing process. The amount of distortion depends on several factors such as the
chucking forces applied to the connector during machining, material grade, machining sequence,
and metal removal rate. Free state variation is usually confined to the large diameter, thin wall
products.

6. RESPONSIBILITIES

6.1 Responsibilities are defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0002.

7. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

7.1 Personnel qualification is defined in the most current revision of TenarisHydril document
TSH-GP-00.0003.

8. PROCEDURES

8.1 Inspection

8.1.1 Measurement with MRP Gage

8.1.1.1 A Single MRP gage is used to established the thread ovality and average thread
diameter. Place the stationary contact of the MRP gage on the thread crest at the
thread crest at the gage pin lockup. Sweep the indicator side of the MRP gage
across the thread crest 180 degrees around the connection. The indicator reading
shall be set to the actual measured thread diameter.

Example: If the pin thread diameter measures +0.004”, set the indicator to read +
0.004”. Take measurements 360 degrees around the connection. Record the

highest and the lowest reading. The difference between the highest and lowest
reading is the actual ovality.

8.1.1.2 Drawing Example Single MRP

8.1.2 Free State Variation

Free state variations that meet the following criteria are acceptable.

8.1.2.1 The average diameter of the feature shall meet the dimensional requirements
specified on the Inspection Report. The average is determined by using the
minimum and maximum measured diameters for the feature.

8.1.2.2 All machined features in a given plane perpendicular to the connection centerline,
shall have the same variation. The same variation is defined as the same direction
and an amount 0.005” or less than the variation found in the other features.
Variation along the axial length of the connection shall be the same direction, but
need not be the same amount.

Example: The box face countrbore has a maximum reading of +0.015” from
nominal. The box turned OD located over the counterbore shall have its maximum
reading at the same circumferential location as the counterbore, and its value shall
be +0.010” to + 0.020” from the nominal turned OD.

8.1.2.3 The maximum amount of variation between the extremes for the measured feature
shall be as indicated below:

8.1.2.3.1 The maximum amount of variation for products with metal-to-metal seals
(Type 5X3) shall not exceed one-half the diametrical thread taper change
per revolution. The metal-to-metal shall blue in accordance with TSH-IP-
00.0074

8.1.2.3.2 The maximum amount of variation for products without thread seals
(Type 5X1) is based on the pipe OD to wall thickness (D/t) ratio.

a) Products with D/t ratios less than 20, the maximum allowable variation
is one-half the diameteical thread taper change per revolution.

b) Product with D/t ratios equal to 20, but less than 30, the maximum
allowable variation is equal to the dimeterical thread taper change per
revolution.

c) Product with D/t ratio equal to 30 but less than 40, the maximum allow
variation is equal to 1 ¼ the dimeterical thread taper change per
revolution.

d) Product with D/t ratios equal to 40 or greater, the maxium allowable

variation is equal to 1 ½ the diameterical thread taper change per
revolution.

8.2 Acceptance / Rejection criteria

Thread Ovality and free State Variation are acceptable is the measured values are within the
tolerances indicated on the Inspection Report.

8.3 Records

The result of these inspections shall be recorded on the IR.
