Homework - 2

Unsteady, incompressible, laminar and fully developed flow inside a circular pipe can
be expressed by following 1D parabolic PDE form of Navier-Stokes equation where
u(r,t) is to be calculated.

𝜌 =− +𝜇 (𝑟 )
𝜕𝑡 𝜕𝑥 𝑟 𝜕𝑟 𝜕𝑟

Boundary conditions for the problem are symmetry at the center and no-slip on the
walls. Initially the fluid is at rest.
𝜕𝑢
(𝑟 = 0, 𝑡) = 0
𝜕𝑟
𝑢(𝑟 = 𝑅, 𝑡) = 0
𝑢(𝑟, 𝑡 = 0) = 0

Examine water flow at Re=2000 inside a L=10-meter-long pipe with radius R=2.5 cm.
Obtain numerically the velocity profile when pressure drop is 5.12 Pa. For water density
ρ is 1000 kg/m3 and dynamic viscosity μ = 0.001 kg/ms.

a-) with explicit FTCS scheme

b-) with implicit BTCS scheme
c-) with implicit Crank-Nicholson scheme

For all solutions numerical approaches present followings:

1. Comparative plots of u(r) for 5, 25 and 50 nodes in radial coordinates.
2. Calculate flow rates for all methods (with 50 nodes) and tabulate. (Hint: Use
pR 4
trapezoidal rule for integral and you can verify your result by V  ).
8L
3. Calculate wall shear stress for all methods and tabulate.
