SEMESTER 2, 2022
SHORT TEST 1
Duration: 50 Minutes
Marks: 35
This assessment contributes 14% to the course
Instructions:
There are a total of 2 pages in the paper.
There are a total of 2 questions. Both are compulsory.
Some useful formulae are provided on page 2.
Use a blue or a black pen for writing.
Answer each question neatly in the answer booklet provided and clearly number the
question attempted. All relevant working must be shown.
Show all necessary working. Partial marks will be awarded for partially correct answers.
Students may use a calculator, provided it is silent & non-programmable.
If you use extra sheets of paper, attach it securely to the answer booklet.
Write your student identity number at the top of each sheet used.
Question 1 [ 4 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 17 Marks]
(a) Use the rigorous definition of limits to prove that
𝑥
lim = 1.
→ 𝑥+1
(b) Evaluate
lim −
→0
(c) A spherical balloon is inflated so that its volume is increasing at a rate of 20 ft /min. How
fast is the surface area of the balloon increasing when the radius is 4 ft?
(d) Use the right endpoint approximation to find the area under the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 over the
interval [0, 1].

Question 2 [ (3 + 5) + 5 + 5 = 18 Marks]
(a) (i) Sketch the graphs of 𝑥 = 𝑦 − 4𝑦 + 2 and 𝑥 = 𝑦 − 2 on the same Cartesian plane.
(b) Find the volume of the solid whose base is the region bounded between the curves 𝑦 = √𝑥
and 𝑦 = for 1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 4 and whose cross-sections perpendicular to the 𝑥-axis are squares.
√
(c) Using the method of disk technique, find the volume of the solid that results when the region
enclosed by 𝑦 = √𝑥, and 𝑦 = 0 is revolved about the line 𝑥 = 4.
