Movie Analysis

Name: Sharon R. Ela, MPA

The Queen, a British historical drama depicts events following the death
of Princess Diana. The film is about Queen Elizabeth II's (played Helen
Mirren) leadership during this crisis as she deals with public grief and
criticisms of her handling of the situation. The Queen struggles to
reconcile her royal duties with her own feelings and the changing
expectations of British citizens throughout the entire film.

Leadership Analysis: Queen Elizabeth II offers a compelling insight into

leadership in times of crisis. Queen Elizabeth II, a leader initially out-of-
touch with public emotions and expectations is shown to learn how to
adapt and demonstrate empathy. The Queen's interactions with family
and advisors show her navigating political and emotional issues
gracefully and with dignity, even under intense pressure from her staff
and the media.

The film's main theme is leadership during difficult times. The Queen is
portrayed as a strong, decisive leader that is able to unite the country
despite tragedy. She listens to others' opinions, but she ultimately
accepts responsibility for her own decisions and is firm in her
convictions. This is in contrast to the approach of some of her advisers
who seem more concerned about public opinion than doing what's right.
The film also emphasizes the importance of leaders being able to adapt
their actions to new situations. Initially, the Queen appears to be
resistant to change. However, as the film progresses, she begins to
learn to listen and respond to her people's needs. This ability to adapt is
crucial for leaders in a world that is constantly changing.

Overall, The Queen provides a powerful look at leadership in times of

crisis. The film shows how important empathy, adaptability and
responsibility are in leadership.

Helen Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. She is the

character that shows leadership skills. The sudden death of Diana puts
Queen Elizabeth in a tough situation. She is first portrayed as out of
touch with public emotions and expectations. However, she gradually
adapts and shows empathy to the people.

Queen Elizabeth II has a transformational style of leadership. It is clear

in her ability to inspire and motivate her team in order to achieve a
common goal. In this case, the goal was to honor Princess Diana and to
address the grief of the public. She also listens to her advisors' opinions
and seeks their expertise whenever necessary.

Also, Queen Elizabeth II demonstrates a servant-leadership style that

emphasizes the importance of putting others' needs first. This is
demonstrated by her visits with people mourning Princess Diana and
listening to their concerns. She can connect with people, understand
their perspectives and make better decisions by using this approach.
Overall, the leadership style of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen is a
blend of servant and transformational leadership. She motivates and
inspires her team, empathizing and putting others' needs first. She is
able to lead her country in a tough time and unite people when tragedy
strikes.

I believe that the leadership style used by Queen Elizabeth II was

effective. Her servant and transformational leadership styles enabled her
to navigate an emotional and complex situation with grace. She inspired
her team to achieve a common goal, while also showing empathy for
those who were grieving and putting others' needs first.

In the film, Queen Elizabeth's ability to adapt to her mistakes and learn
from them is one of her greatest strengths. She struggled at first to
understand the emotions and expectations of the public, but was open to
listening to others' opinions and seeking their expertise. It allowed her to
adapt her approach, and ultimately lead her nation through a challenging
time.

In Queen Elizabeth's position, I would have communicated more openly

with people. The Queen did eventually unite the country but there were
times in the movie when she appeared distant and unapproachable. She
could have gained the trust of her people by being more transparent and
open about her decision-making process.
Overall, I think that Queen Elizabeth's leadership style was effective in
The Queen, and that she demonstrated key leadership qualities such as
empathy, adaptability and responsibility.
