Chapter 1. Introduction to digital project management

What are digital projects?

Digital projects are referred to modern projects that employ digital technologies, such
as experience platforms, enterprise portals, content systems, commerce platforms,
user experience and mobile technologies, search, collaboration, etc., to create and
promote a unique product, service or result.
There are three key components which are active elements that play a role in
projects within the digital world:
● Temporary nature. Digital projects have a defined start and end date,
conducted to achieve a specific goal.
● Endeavor. They attempt to create and do something considering that there
exists the uncertainty for it to succeed by its outcome.
● Uniqueness. The output of a project is something innovative, distinct, and
new.

Key tenets of digital projects

A typical digital project relies on several key principles to ensure its success. These
principles include:
● Modern technologies: A typical digital project uses modern technologies
such as experience platforms, business products and API platforms, as these
technologies allow the creation of innovative and efficient digital solutions.
● Agile or iterative methodology: It involves launching the project in short and
flexible times. This methodology establishes principles such as early and
continuous delivery of value to the customer, close collaboration between the
team and the client, and responsiveness to changes.
● Success metrics: The main success metrics in these projects are user
engagement, performance, responsiveness, agility and user conversion.
These metrics represent the effectiveness and impact of the digital solution in
terms of user satisfaction and engagement.
● Internet users and omnichannel capabilities: Digital solutions target
Internet users and provide omnichannel capabilities. This means that the
solutions are designed to be accessible on different devices, in order to reach
a broader audience.
Mapping digital capabilities across a solution value chain
Digital capabilities are those abilities, skills and knowledge related to the digital world
that help someone to achieve their personal and work-related goals. They help to
use technology effectively and efficiently in order to communicate, obtain information,
buy products, navigate online or even gain money through the internet. In order for a
digital platform to succeed it is the responsibility of the project manager to identify,
organize and map the digital capabilities that the customer uses and follows during
its whole process.
These competences are determined from start to finish in order to separate them in
sections and be able to give specific attention to each stage. During this part of the
project, which is usually done in the requirements elaboration, specialists of certain
areas are divided between the phases so they can improve all of the customer’s
journey for it to be as satisfactory and successful as possible.
Some of the digital capabilities that can be found during the procedure may include
marketing, user enrollment, feature exploration, shopping experience, purchase
experience and post purchase. Even so, the abilities needed and found in each
project depend greatly on the kind of business that is being made.

Digital project phases

● Planning phase: Scope definition, schedule planning, costs and effort
planning, resource planning, communication planning and risk planning.
● Execution phase: Testing is a main activity in this phase. Project manager
carries out quality control measures and performs risk management activities.
● Maintenance phase: We maintain the solution and add incremental
enhancements. The project enters into steady operations mode.

Ideas for Digital Marketing Projects

It is the planification of strategies and actions that are going to be used with the
objective that everything being done to market has a justification. To do this, what
seeks to be achieved must be defined, who the communication is directed towards
and how the actions are going to be carried out. Some examples of marketing ideas
for digital projects are:
● Customer satisfaction for a digital marketing agency.
● Return on investment for digital marketing strategies
