ELEVATORS &
ESCALATORS
RULE XIII -
SECTION 1302

LIST OF TERMINOLOGIES
ELEVATOR - An elevator is a machine that transports people or freight between
levels, decks, or floors of a building. Elevators are usually cable-assisted,
hydraulic cylinder-assisted, or roller-track-assisted.

HOISTWAY - The hoistway of an elevator is the space in which the elevator

travels. It runs vertically and houses equipment like the rail guides, the cab and
the counterweight depending on the type of elevator: hydraulic or traction.

HOIST PIPE - A hoist pipe is used to raise the pipe-rail system so that the
ground underneath can be worked, or to replace the ground cover/plastic

MACHINE ROOM - The machine room holds the elevator's drives and controllers
and is where you will find the main control systems for the elevators as well.
While machine rooms can be used in both hydraulic and traction elevators, they
are not required for all installations.

HOIST ROPE - A hoist rope is used to raise and lower the loads normally
handling general cargo and require anti-rotational properties to prevent
uncontrolled rotation/ spinning of the cargo.

FALL-FREE SAFETY DEVICE - An elevator safety device for an elevator car,

which includes one or more hydraulically-powered braking assemblies mounted
on the cross-rail or safety plank of the elevator car and designed to selectively
brake on a pulley carried by a guide rail of the elevator car upon detection of a
safety condition.

RULE XIII -
SECTION 1302

LIST OF TERMINOLOGIES
ANGLE OF INCLINATION - It refers to how steeply it is angled relative to the
horizontal plane. It determines the slope at which the steps or treads of the
escalator are positioned. A greater angle means a steeper escalator, while a
smaller angle indicates a more gradual slope.

BALUSTRADE - The balustrade in an escalator refers to the protective barrier or

railing that runs along the sides of the escalator, enclosing the moving steps. It
serves as a safety feature to prevent passengers from accidentally falling off the
escalator while it is in motion.

SPEED RATE - The speed rate of an escalator refers to how fast the steps or
treads move along the escalator's incline. It is typically measured in feet per
minute (ft/min) or meters per second (m/s). The speed rate determines how
quickly passengers are transported from one level to another.
