Establishing a Foundation for Effective Assessment: A Practical Guidebook for

Educators

Objectives:
● To offer practical and step-by-step guidance on the various types of assessments.
● To equip educators with practical tools and methodologies to conduct fair and
effective assessments, ensuring that students’ performance is evaluated with
consistency, accuracy, and equity.
● To guide educators how to assess the effectiveness of their own assessment
strategies and make adjustments as needed.

Rationale

Assessments are an essential in any framework in regards to education, this involves

many elements such as tools, methods, and rubrics. A rubric plays a crucial role during
assessments, it serves as a guide in evaluating an academic task or assignment.
Furthermore it articulates the expected outcomes and standards in fulfilling the given task.
Since it has become a significant component in establishing assessments for execution, it
certainly involves validity and accuracy. There is a definite link between student performance
and administering rubrics. Based on a study on the Linking Rubrics and Academic
Performance: An Engagement Theory Perspective; simply providing a rubric does not
necessarily lift student performance whereas higher grades are evident when students
engage with discussing the rubrics. Rubrics seem to have complications when it comes to
effectively employing them. As unavoidable as it may seem, some criterias may have its
mishaps in specific kinds of assessments, especially when it comes to tasks with subjective
purposes. According to Grant Wiggins, most current rubrics tend to overvalue polish,
content, and process while under-valuing the impact of the result, as noted above. In some
statements, it reveals that too many rubrics are fixated on surface features and it discards
whether the purpose was actually achieved or not. Undeniably there are advantages in the
creation of rubrics, although in order to fully utilize and fulfill its potential as a basis for
academic evaluation there has to be a manual to refer to. Certain enough educators would
not desire to implement “bad rubrics”, therefore the purpose of this project is to establish a
practical guidebook in creating or implementing their rubrics, in many different areas. The
aim of this proposal is to be able to create a handbook that is reliable and valid, in order for
educators to effectively employ rubrics in assessing student performance and to foster the
creativity and autonomy of the learners.
