SECOND SEMESTER TEST 2014-2015
READING: Read the following passage and choose the best answer to the questions below
In the 1960s, The Beatles were probably the most famous pop group in the whole world. Since then, there have been a great many
groups that have achieved enormous fame, so it is perhaps difficult now to imagine how sensational The Beatles were at that time. They
were four boys from the north of England and none of them had any training in music. They started by performing and recording songs
by black Americans and they had some success with these songs. Then they started writing their own songs and that was when they
became really popular. The Beatles changed pop music. They were the first pop group to achieve great success from songs they had
written themselves. After that it became common for groups and singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long
career. Their first hit record was in 1963 and they split up in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it had
become too dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and tried to take their clothes as souvenirs!
However, today some of their songs remain as famous as they were when they first came out. Throughout the world many people can
sing part of a Beatles song if you ask them.

Jazz had its beginnings in song. Its roots lie deep in the tradition of African-American folk singing that once flourished
throughout the rural Southland of the United States before the Civil War (1861-1865). The African Americans, in those days,
owned only a few simple musical instruments which they made for themselves from boxes, barrels, and brooms. Their voices
were their principal means of musical expression. Songs of work and play, trouble and hope, rose on rich and rhythmic voices
everywhere in the South – from peddlers crying their wares to people in rural areas, from work gangs on the railroads, from
5
families gathered at the day’s end to sing away their weariness in their unpainted cottages overlooking the cotton fields. These

VI. READING: Sentosa, an island to the south of Singapore, is a popular resort for tourists and locals alike. Just a few minutes
by ferry, cable car or bus from Singapore, it is an ideal place for holiday makers.
There are many attractions on the island, including the Underwater World. In this tropical aquarium, visitors have the
opportunity to come face to face with over six thousand marine creatures from 350 species through an 83-meter acrylic tunnel.
The latest additions to this collection are the giant spider crab, the wolf eel and the giant octopus.
The giant spider crab is found mainly along the Pacific coast of Japan. It is the world's largest living shellfish and has a leg
span of some 3.5 meters. It is often called the dead man's crab in Japanese and is believed to eat the flesh of drowned victims.
The wolf eel is exceptionally ugly and looks like a monster from the deep. Contrary to what most people believe, the wolf eel
is actually very shy. However, when it is threatened, it crushes the enemy with powerful jaws and sharp teeth.
The last of these new attractions – the giant octopus – is often described as a dangerous creature which attacks ships and
people. In fact, it is just a shy creature. It moves by jetting water through a siphon tube. Occasionally, it catches its prey with

Visitors can be sure that these new members of the Underwater World will make their day at Sentosa memorable.

THE THEREMIN
The theremin is perhaps the most unusual and interesting of all of the musical instruments. Though it was invented way back
in 1919 in Russia, it is fully electronic. Even more unusual is the fact that it is played without being touched!
The theremin does not really look like a musical instrument. It looks like a box with a metal stick coming from the top and a
metal circle coming from the side. These two pieces of metal, called antennas, are used to pick up radio waves. The musician holds his
or her left hand near the circle antenna and his or her right hand near the straight antenna. Notes are changed by moving the right hand
closer or farther away from the straight antenna. The volume is changed by moving the left hand closer or farther away from the circle
antenna.
Leon Theremin made the first theremin in Russia in 1919. Vladimir Lenin liked it so much that he sent Leon on a world tour to
show off the Soviet invention of electronic music. Leon traveled the world giving theremin shows. Later, Robert Moog, a student who
sold theremins, invented a new instrument called the synthesizer. The synthesizer was much easier to play than the theremin and could
make many more different sounds. Therefore, interest in the theremin died out.

The sea has been rising relative to the land for at least 100 years, geologists say. During that same period, the Atlantic
Coast has eroded an average of two to three feet per year, the Gulf Cast even faster. Many engineers maintain that seawalls

Faced with the loss of their beaches, other communities have tried a solution: replace the lost sand. These
