DISCUSSION (A) Reaction with bromine in dichloromethane

i. State the reaction condition for the substitution reaction of cyclohexane.

ii. Complete the following table:

Reaction of cyclohexane with bromine

Under Equation: Type of

sunlight reaction:

Reactions of cyclohexene with bromine in CH2Cl2

Under Equation: Type of

sunlight reaction:

In the Equation:

Reaction of toluene with bromine in CH2Cl2

Under Equation: Type of

sunlight reaction:

(B) Oxidation with a cold alkaline solution of KMnO4 (Baeyer’s Test)

i. Which of the hydrocarbons in this experiment can undergo reaction with

alkaline KMnO4?

ii. Write chemical equation for the reaction in (i).

EXERCISES 1. Write the mechanism for the reaction of cyclohexane with bromine

Chemical equation:

1. Chain initiation step

2. Chain propagation step:

3. Termination Step:

2. State the function of sunlight in part A.

CONCLUSION 1.The chemical properties of an alkane, alkene and arene were studied which
are cyclohexane and toluene can react with Br2 in CH2Cl2 under sunlight but
not in the dark. Other than that, cyclohexane and toluene also cannot react
during Baeyer’s Test. However, cyclohexene can react with Br2 in CH2Cl2
under sunlight also can react in Baeyer’s Test. 2.The differentiate for an alkane
from an alkene and arene was studied where cyclohexene is less reactive than
cyclohexane and toluene are more reactive. Cyclohexene can react with Br2 in
CH2Cl2 under sunlight and in the dark and with Baeyer’s Test while
cyclohexane and toluene only can react with Br2 in CH2Cl2 under sunlight.
