• Scope of thermodynamics and the definitions of units and dimensions, total and
specific quantities, extensive/intensive properties, dimensionless groups and
dimensional consistencies
• Lecture 2
• Definitions of systems (closed/open), temperature, pressure, energy, force, heat,
work and power
• Lecture 3
• Definitions of internal energy (U), state/path functions, equilibrium, Gibbs phase
rule, reversible/irreversible processes and the calculation of the associated works
• Energy balance for closed systems (general form) and cyclic processes
• Definitions and illustrations of special processes including isobaric, isometric,
isothermal and adiabatic processes
• Lecture 4
• Energy balance for specific cases of closed systems and open systems (general)
• Definitions of enthalpy (H) and heat capacities (Cp and Cv)
• Application of the first law of thermodynamics to specific processes (isobaric,
isochoric and isothermal) to calculate work and heat
• Lecture 5
• Mechanisms of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation)
