PART III: WORK OUT QUESTION

Question (1)

A farmer has 20 hectares for growing barley and swedes. The farmer has to decide
how much of each to grow. The cost per hectare for barley is 30 birr and for swedes is
20 birr. The farmer has budgeted 480 birr. Barley requires 1man-day per hectare and
swedes require 2 man-days per hectare. There are 36 man-days available. The profit
on barley is 100 birr per hectare and on swedes is 120 birr per hectare.

Required:
A. Formulate the mathematical model of the linear programming problem (4%)
B. Using the graphic method, determine the number of hectares of each crop the
farmer should sow to maximize profits? (4%)
C. Find maximize profits? (2%)

Question (2)

A chemical company produced two types of compounds, A and B. Each of them

requires ingredients of X1 and X2 per kg. Compound A requires 1kg of X1 and 2 kg
of X2 ingredients and Compound B requires 3 kg of X1 and 1 kg of X2 ingredients.
The minimum requirements of X1 and X2 ingredients for producing compounds A
and B are 80 and 75 respectively Finally the cost per Kg of A and B are 4 birr and 6
birr respectively.

Required:

A. Formulate the mathematical model of the linear programming problem (4%)

B. Using the simplex method, show the necessary steps and find the quantities of
A and B which would give a supply of X1 and X2 at a minimum cost? (4%)
