TYPE OF SUPPORT- IDEALIZATION OF STRUCTURE

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
Support and Connections
• Type of Support and Connections:
• Structural members are joined together in various ways depending on the
intent of the designer.

Connections:

 Pin (Hinged) Connections

 Roller Support
 Fixed (Rigid) Joint
 Spring Support

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 2
Support and Connections

Roller Connections
This support carries only
shear forces between
jointed members.

The roller support allows

rotation and one
displacement of the
support point

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 3
Support and Connections

Pin (Hinge) Connections

 This connection carries
shear and axial forces
but not moment
between different
members.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 4
Support and Connections

Fixed Connections
This connection carries
moment, shear and axial
forces between different
members

Spring Connections
These supports are like the previous but with the difference that they are not ideally
rigid but with some real stiffness. The spring has a stiffness constant c equals to the
force caused by displacement d = 1.

Geometric Properties
A of an Area
• 1-Centroid of an Area
The centroid of an area refers to the point that defines the geometric
center for the area

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 15
• Summary:
• Define the basic type of support and connections (Roller, Pinned, Fixed)

• Understanding how the connection prevents any degree of freedom or displacement

of the member.

• A pin-connected joint and a roller support allow some freedom for slight rotation,
whereas a fixed joint allows no relative rotation between the connected members

• Model and analyze a structure
