Advancement in green technology for maritime efficiency by harnessing energy from waves

Watts in waves refers to the concept of harnessing energy from ocean waves to generate
electricity. It is an innovative approach in green technology that aims to improve maritime
efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

WHY HARNESSING ENERGY FROM WAVES IS REQUIRED

In our research we find that currently merchant ships are using fossil fuels for propulsion and for
various activities onboard .As per international maritime organization (IMO) report 3% of
greenhouse gases emission is done by marine vessel itself because of their fossil fuel
consumption .So for achieving the goal of zero emission proposed by IMO and the target is to
complete it by 2050, it is required to start looking for other options of energy for maritime
industry .By doing research we find SEA WAVE as one of the best alternative of fossil fuel for
maritime industry .

HOW WE USE SEA WAVE

According to our study we can use it in two different methods.

1: By wave energy converters .They capture the wave energy (kinetic energy) and turn it into
electric energy for various use onboard . These wave energy converters can be integrated into
existing means ex. ships , buoys etc.

According to our research advancements in this field involve the development of wave energy
converters (WECs) that can capture the kinetic energy of waves and convert it into usable
electrical power. These devices are designed and to be installed in coastal areas or offshore,
where there is a significant wave energy resource.

According to our study there are different types of WECs, including oscillating water columns,
point absorbers, and attenuators, each utilizing different mechanisms to convert wave energy into
electricity. These devices can be integrated into existing maritime infrastructure, such as offshore
platforms or buoys, to efficiently harness wave power.
According to our research the benefits of harnessing energy from waves include a reduction in
greenhouse gas emissions, as wave energy is a clean and renewable source. It also helps to
diversify the energy mix, promotes energy independence, and contributes to the overall
sustainability of the maritime industry.

According to our research as advancements continue to be made in this field, there is potential
for significant growth in the utilization of wave energy as a reliable and sustainable source of
power for various maritime applications.

2: In our research we found The new UK review study which was done on the swimming of
larger fishes such as whales and it suggests they harness the wave energy and whirlpools for easy
movements .Experiment has shown that flapping foils (Based on new UK review) a technology
known as wave devouring propulsion can capture the free wave energy and propel ship forward
Additionally the flapping foil s can reduce the roll and pitch of the ship and also work as an
stabilizer.

BENIFITS OF THOSE ALTERNATIVES OVER CONVENTIONAL METHODS

 Reduces dependency over fossil fuel.

 Less emission of greenhouse gases.

 Flapping foils are very silent resulting into less sound pollution .
