Context:
The assessment is prescribed to advance the skills of student’s user experience (UX)
understanding and analysis. The assessment requires students to produce a robust proposal
to re-develop a local brand’s current website to enhance the UX.
The assessments key understanding is to allow students to better understand UX design.
This skill for a designer is essentially acting as the bridge between client and audience. It
requires a solid understanding of the client’s product and limitations and the target
audience including their psychology and behaviours, along with their method of
engagement (the hardware/software).
The assessment will improve student’s analysis and recognition of typical UX flaws and
improvements. It will also improve students’ the ability to identify target audiences by
creating persona stories and to engage in the analysis of user behaviours, a skill that is
transdisciplinary. It will prepare students for an increasingly required skill set (UX design),
which is also fast becoming a career option for designers.

Task:
Students will be required to produce a proposal to develop the digital strategies in place for
a small to medium sized brand that will be provided by the college. The strategic vision
proposed by the student must include the aim to increase sales.
Students will need to investigate the methodology, techniques and practices of UX. A
thorough understanding of existing competitor strategies is required. This will enable you
to identify the ineffective areas and illustrate how your strategic vision improves upon
existing competitor.
Brand:
The company you are designing the proposal for is a new ‘start-up’ with little existing
content in the form of branding. You will be provided general details on their goals,
products, user base, and some imagery that define their look and feel. It will be up to you
to identify existing competitors in the field, and to analyse their UX in order to design the
new site.
The brands general details can be found on Blackboard inside of the Assessment 1 area
titled: DIG103_Interaction_Design_Assessment_1_Assets.zip

Submission items:
Students should initially analyse the provided brands design strategy notes. Students will
then need to provide an analysis of competitor brands, personas of target user, UX test
results on a competitor’s website, and then design and propose a new strategic vision of
their front-end design. Industry practice is to present the finished front-end design to the
client to approve before beginning to code. The document submitted should present a clear
summary of their findings and feel professional. The document must include:
1. 1 x SWOT analysis on a competitor websites UX
2. 3 x Personas of target audience
3. 1 x Results from UX testing on competitors site*
4. 1 x High-fidelity visual design of proposed homepage for desktop
* Students need to test at least 6 x individuals with 2 questions each on the relative
competitor’s website. This will assist in giving insight into user behaviours and preferences.

Students are encouraged to use modern web prototyping software such as Figma, Adobe XD
and Sketch. Students are discouraged to use traditional design software such as Adobe
InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. Students need to export their web design to an image
format to include in their presentation document.

Format and submission requirements:

Students will create and submit a 5-7 page PDF document.

Evaluation criteria:
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
1. Identify digital user experience problems and issues of a brand
2. Solve user experience problems creatively using currently available digital solutions
3. Conduct testing with users to identify UX problems and the students ability to
describe and synthesize these issues clearly
4. Design solutions to identified UX problems to illustrate a clear and cohesive digital
solution in the form of a webpage proposal
