5.0 Topic Objectives

At the end of the session, students should be

able to :-

(1) Understand the mode of shear failure.

(2) Design a set of suitable shear reinforcement.

(3) Determine the shear resistance of a RC beam.

TOPIC 5.1 :
Mode of Shear failure
5.1 Mode of Shear failure
Shear
Shear forces accompany a change in bending moment in beams and
give rise to diagonal tension in the concrete and bond stress between
The reinforcement and the concrete.

Shear Failure Of Reinforced Concrete Beam

When the tensile stress due to shear force exceeds the min design concrete shear
stress of RC beam, cracks on the inclined plane near to the support or/and at
the concentrated load will occur.
5.1 Mode of Shear failure
When such cracks are not addressed , shear failure through the crack can
happen.
To arrest the crack for further deteriorating, shear reinforcement should be provided.
The reinforcement is either in the form of shear link or stirrup.

The shear reinforcement is expressed in terms of type of steel, diameter and

spacing.
