DRIBBLING

This is the legal method of

advancing the ball by oneself,
as opposed to passing it to
another player or shooting for
the basket. It consists of
bouncing the ball on the floor
continuously with one hand
while walking or running down
the court.
FUNCTION
1. To advance the ball up
the court.
2. To drive to the hoop.
3. To get open for a shot.
4. To open up a passong
lane, to have a better
chance of completing a
pass.
FUNCTION
5. To get out of a
trap.
6. To kill the clock
at the end of a game.
How to Dribble?
o Dribbling should be done with
finger pads and the fingers
should be relaxed and spread.

o Use your fingertips, not the

palms of your hands.

o Basketball is played on the tips

of your fingers and the balls of
your feet.
How to Dribble?
o Use your forearm and
wrist to bounce the ball.
Don’t look at the ball.

o Keep your head up and

eyes forward. You must
learn to use either hand.
Types of Dribble
1. High Bounce
2. Control Dribble
3. Speed Dribble
4. Crossover Dribble
5. Hesitation Dribble
6. Between the Legs
HIGH BOUNCE
The high dribble is used
when you are trying to
move the ball up the court
very quickly. Typically, you
will see high dribbles after
steals and during fast-break
opportunities.
CONTROL DRIBBLE
When a defender is
guarding you closely, you
should use the control dribble
and you can use your “arm-
bar” to keep the defender
from reaching around you. Do
not stop your dribble until you
can either pass or shoot.
SPEED DRIBBLE
To move the
ball quickly
down the floor
in an open
court.
CROSSOVER DRIBBLE
Simply switch
dribbling from one
hand to the other by
bouncing the ball in
front of you across to
the other side and to
quickly change your
direction on the court.
BETWEEN THE LEGS
This kind of
dribble is used to
go past a
defender who is
overplaying you.
PASSING
Passing is one of the most crucial
skills in basketball. It allows both players
who are on the team to take control of the
ball and move around the court while
passing the ball towards a player who is in a
better position.
The chest pass is
thrown with the ball being
CHEST
placed above and between
the two arms. The motion
PASS
of passing is similar to a
layup; instead of raising
the ball over the head, it is
brought chest high by
pulling it back with both
hands.
BOUNCE PASS
The bounce
pass is a
basketball play in
which the passer
throws the ball to
a teammate just
above the floor.
OVERHEAD PASS
This pass
starts off with the
ball high above
your head, and it
ends wide open
for a teammate to
take it in for a
layup.
This is a type of
pass when a player makes
a normal pass and throws
the ball around his or her
back to make that pass.
This pass is usually
performed with one hand,
although it can also be
performed with both
hands.
BEHIND-THE-BACK PASS
BASEBALL A baseball pass is
PASS a method of passing in
basketball that resembles
the action of throwing a
baseball. The move is
used to send a long pass
quickly downfield to a
teammate or drive past
an opposing defender
with fakes and dribbling
moves.
PICK UP and ROLL PASS
The play consists of a ball handler (who
may or may not have an ally) approaching a
free-throw line extended, and being approached
by a teammate (called a screener) who will set a
screen for the ball handler. The screener can
either roll to the basket while the ball handler
goes behind him, or they can both curl towards
each other and allow for a pick and pop.

LAY-UP
The lay-up is one of
the simplest shots in
basketball and is used in
one of two different
situations during a
game: – When you are
under the ring, and you
get the ball while
shooting through the
basket. – When you
dribble the ball through a
crowd and wind up
under the net.
The One-Handed
Underhand This shot must be
practiced – a lot – before
being put to the test in a
game because it is a
tough one. Additionally,
you can’t use the one-
handed underhand
when you are in a set
position.
The Two-Handed
Underhand Usually saved for long-
range opportunities, this
shot is not as common
today as it used to be. The
most well-known player to
make this shot popular
was Bob McDermott, who
became famous for his
ability to shoot from any
place in the inside court.
JUMP SHOT
The jump shot almost
always turns into
points on the
scoreboard. This shot
is often paired with a
fake, and it is popular
with current
basketball players of
all levels.
HOOK SHOT
The hook shot can be
paired with a number
of different moves on
the court, so it is a
highly versatile
basketball shot that
can be put into play in
distances from mid-
range to short-range.
FREE THROW
A player gets a free throw when they have been
fouled by a player on the opposing team, and they
make this shot from the free throw line.
Players score 3 points for any basket
made beyond the 3 point line, in
bounds.
Players score 2 points for any basket
made inside the 3 point line, in
bounds.
Players score 1 point for made free
throws.
