CHAPTER 3
Methodology

Research Design

The research design that will be utilized in this study will be the Case Study in
which the study will focus on particular participants, the Humanities and Social Sciences
(HUMSS) students. Relatively, the Interview method is appropriate for this study since it
will ask questions to determine the effects of parenting styles on the academic
performance of HUMSS students which will also be the participants. The questions to be
asked are open-ended questions wherein participants are allowed to elaborate their
answers.

Research Locale

The research locale of this study will be at the private non-sectarian University
of the East-Caloocan Campus located along Samson Road, Caloocan City Philippines,
wherein the Grade 11 and 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students from
the Basic Education Department this academic year 2020-2021 will be the participants of
the study that will determine the effects of parenting styles on their academic
performance.

Participants of the Study

The participants of this study will be the Grade 11 and 12 Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMSS) students that are currently enrolled in the University of the
East- Caloocan Campus. It was said that one of the researchers’ main goal is to
disseminate or raise awareness on the outcome of their study to their fellow Humanities
and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students. The Sampling method that the researchers will
be using is the “Stratified” method. The “Stratified” method will be picking participants
that share a common characteristic and that characteristic, in this case, is being a
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) student.

Research Instrument

The research instrument that will be used in this study to gather data from the
students of the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is a set of questions that will
be asked through interview wherein participants will be asked to talk about
the area under consideration that will be conducted through online. The questions
from the interview will come from the unstructured questionnaire created by the
researchers and the online interview will be facilitated by the researchers and will take
place in video conferencing sites such as Zoom, Google Meet, or Facebook Messenger.

The research instrument is convenient for both part of the researcher and the
respondent because it will be done through online.

Data Gathering Procedure

An interview method will be conducted. It is a data collection method in which

Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) participants will be asked to talk about the
area with consideration. The type of interview that will be conducted is a Semi-structured
interview in which there will be a specific set of questions but there will be also additional
probes that may come up in the form of follow-up questions. Questions will be asked to
the participants to assess the effects of parenting styles on their academic performance.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers in this study have done their absolute best in gathering data
from consenting students, as well as protecting their identity afterward. No amount of
harm is done to create this study, researchers respect the rights of fellow students to
refuse participation. Every piece of information in research that came from another study
will be credited and documented from its respective authors because researchers
understand the value of the intellectual property. Apart from that, the researchers also
respect the data they're given; avoiding bias and maintaining integrity is of utmost
priority.
