C. Lesson presentation

Suppose that you have to make a tricolor gift box in

the shape of a cube or box and you want to cover it
with used colored paper. You will have to cover one
face at a time until all 6 faces are covered. The
entire area of the surface covering the cube or box
is called the surface area of the box.

The surface area is the area that describes the

colored paper that will be used to cover a
geometric solid.

The surface area (SA) is a measure in square

units of the regions covering all the faces of the
space figures. Hence, you can find the surface area
of a cube by adding the area of all the square faces
that enclosed the solid.
The area of a square can be
found by multiplying the
measure of a side(s) by itself, or
by squaring a side (s).

SURFACE AREA OF A CUBE

The surface area of a cube with side s is

equal to .

Example 1: What is the surface area of a cube

with a side of 3 cm?

SA of a cube = 6 × s²
SA of a cube = 6 cm × s²
SA of a cube = 6 cm × 3²
SA of a cube = 6 cm × 9
SA of a cube = 54 sq. cm

Suppose your tricolor gift box is 30 cm long, 20 cm

wide, and 10 cm tall. If you know the surface area
of the box, then you can find out how much paper
it would take to cover the box.

Remember that boxes such as the one shown

above are called rectangular prism since all the
faces are in the shape of a rectangle.

The top and the bottom face are called the bases.

The lateral area of a rectangular prism is equal to
the sum of the area of the four faces that are not
the bases.

The area of a rectangle can be

found by multiplying the
measures of the length (L) and
width (W) of the rectangle.

The surface area of a rectangular prism is the sum

of the areas of all the rectangular surfaces or faces
of the box.

upcoming birthday a box of Toblerone bar that is in
the shape of triangular prism. And you want to
cover it using colored paper. If you know the

Example 4: The base of a pyramid is a square with

side 4 cm. The 4 lateral faces are triangular with
base 4 cm and height of 6 cm. What is the surface
area of the square pyramid?

Here are the steps in finding the surface area of a

square pyramid.

Step 1: Determine the number of faces the

pyramid has.

Downloaded by Hanna Lingatong (hannalingatong@gmail.com)

Area of a Square = s²
Area of a Triangle = ½ × B × H

Area of square base

= 4² = 16 sq. cm

Area of triangular lateral face

= ½ × 4 × 6 = 12 sq. cm

Step 2: Identify what kind of plane figure each

face is.
It has three faces.
• Base is a square face
• The four lateral faces are triangular figures.

Step 3: Recall the area formula for each face.

Step 4: Get the area of each face.

Step 5: Add all 5 areas to get the surface area

SA = Area of the base + Area of four lateral faces

SA = 16 sq. cm + 4(12 sq. cm)
SA = 16 sq. cm + 48 sq. cm
SA = 64 sq. cm

The surface area of a pyramid is equal to

Example 5: A cylinder is 3-cm tall and the radius

of its circular base is 4 cm. What is its surface

Area of a Circle
Step 1: Determine the number of faces the = 3.14 × 4²
pyramid has. = 50.24 sq. cm

Area of a Rectangle
= (2 × π × 4) × 3
= 75.36 sq. cm

Step 2: Identify what kind of plane figure each

face is.

• The bases are circular faces

• The lateral face is a rectangular figure.

Step 3: Recall the area formula for each face.

Step 4: Get the area of each face.

Step 5: Add all 3 areas to get the surface area

SA = Area of two circular bases + Area of rectangle

SA = 2(50.24 sq. cm) + 75.36 sq. cm
SA = 175.84 sq. cm

The surface area of a cylinder is equal to

A sphere is the set of all points in space that are at
a fixed distance from a given point. The fixed
distance is called the radius and the given point
called the center of the sphere.

The surface area of a sphere with radius r

is equal to .

Example 6: The diameter of a sphere is 10 cm.

What is its surface area?

D = 10 cm
r = 5 cm

SA of a sphere = 4 × π × r²
SA of a sphere = 4 × 3.14 × 5²
SA of a sphere = 4 × 3.14 × 5²
SA of a sphere = 3.14 sq. cm

A cone is a geometric solid that has a circular base

and curved surface. It tapers smoothly from its
base to a point called the vertex or apex.

If the vertex is directly over the base, it is called a

right circular cone. If it is not, it is called an
oblique cone.

The height of the cone is the perpendicular

distance from its vertex to its base. The slant
height of a cone is the distance from the apex to
any point lying on the circumference of the box.

the sum of the areas of the circular base and the 2 × 5)
= 2(3.14 × 4) + (2 × 3.14 × 2
area of the lateral or curved surface of the cone.

The area of the base is equal to π × r². If the slant
= 2(12.56) + 62.8
height is s, then the area of the curved surface is π = 25.12 + 62.8
× r × s. = 87.92 sq. cm

If the radius of the circular base is r and the 4. SA of a sphere = 4 × π × r²

slant height of the cone is s, then the surface SA of a sphere = 4 × 3.14 ×
area of a cone is equal to .

5. SA of a cone
Since the slant height (s) is not given, we need to = π × r² + π × r × s
= 3.14 × 3² + 3.14 × 3 × 9
use Pythagorean theorem to get its measure.
= 3.14 × 9 + 3.14 × 3 × 9
