Research or an Interview of an officer/ engineers on the implementation and monitoring

of the safety practices and procedures conducted onboard as per SMS.

The Safety Management System or SMS was implemented due to it’s goal which is to
identify and mitigate safety before it escalate into major issue. According to Stolk
(2021) It is essential that your vessel has a thorough and up-to-date marine safety
management system. At the very least, the SMS is invaluable for risk management.
Without one you find yourself breaching the ISM code as well as your national law and
at risk of having action taken against your business for breach of safety obligations. The
SMS manual of every vessel serves as a tool for risk assessment and it should be
monitored, check regularly and update. The SMS manual helps identify and report
hazards while deploying the resources to keep workplaces safe. In addition, these
systems help with compliance by helping companies meet local regulations. A shipping
company's Safety Management System (SMS) needs to include the following:
Commitment from top management. Policy manuals. Procedures documents for normal
operations and emergency situations (ISM). The SMS manual foster a culture of safety
awareness, responsibility, continuous improvement among all crew members through
communication training and recognition of safety achievements.
