PAULA: Hi everyone, we’re Paula and Marta and we are going to talk about Brazil’s Carnival

MARTA: Here are some pictures to introduce the Brazil’s Carnival, Carnaval is celebrated in many
conutries, but Brazil’s Carnival is the most popular and extravagant.
It’s usually celebrtaed at the end of February or the beginning of March.

PAULA: The first carnival ever celebrated was in 1723 in Rio de Janeiro. Some people think the
custom was originated in Greece. They also say the masks were a tradition brought over from
Portugal in the 1840s

MARTA: The most famous tradition is that the event is always held the week before the Christmas
holiday of Ash Wednesday, with the final full day being Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash
Wednesday.

PAULA: There are lots of things that you can do during Brazil’s Carnival. For example, you can
book sambadrome tickets and take part of the parade, attend to a carnival ball, join the crowds at a
Block Party, go to sambaland... Or you can do the common things like visit Christ the Reemeder or
relax on the beach

MARTA: The objective of the carnival is to enjoy one last week of celebrations before the 40 days
of abstinence that end on Easter, the day of Christ's resurrection.
The typical Carnival dances are a way of celebrating the freedom that the slaves achieved from the
colonizers and are the result of the African influence within Brazilian culture.

PAULA: Here are some interesting facts. More than half a million foreign people come to Brazil
each year. Due to this, more than 10 million litres of beer are drunk. During the period of carnival,
people are not allowed to eat meat. Also, the Brazil’s Carnival has the guinnes record for the biggest
carnival in the world!

MARTA: The conclusion is that by doing this project, we have learned that Brazil’s carnival is one
of the most popular festivities in the world and we would love to have the opportunity to experience
this.

PAULA: Thank you for your attention.
