USE PERSONAL PRONOUNS IN SENTENCES

C. Lesson Proper

Use Personal Pronouns in Sentences

Pronoun is a word that takes the place of noun.

Pronoun is a word that takes the place of noun.
There are many kinds of pronouns, but we are only
going to focus on personal pronouns

First example:
1. Andy is my friend. Andy is nice and Andy likes
ice cream.

______can you please read our first example?

In this example we use Andy’s name three times.
1. Andy is my friend. Andy is nice and Andy likes
ice cream.

Does it sound correct or inappropriate?

Yes, it sounds inappropriate.

To avoid this kind of repetition we can use
personal pronouns.

A personal pronoun is a short word we use as a

simple substitute for the proper name of a A personal pronoun is a short word we use as a
person. simple substitute for the proper name of a
person.
There are two types of personal pronouns.

Subject, personal pronouns, and object personal

pronouns
Subject, personal pronouns, and object personal
pronouns
Subject or subjective personal pronouns are:
I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Subject or subjective personal pronouns are:
I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
What do you think is the personal pronoun that
we should use in our first example?

She
Very good! (praising words may vary)

Can someone replace read the sentence with the

correct personal pronouns in it? Andy is my friend. She is nice and she likes ice
cream.
Very good! (praising words may vary)

Subject pronouns usually comes at the

beginning of a sentence
For example:
She is happy.
They go to the same school. She is happy.
They go to the same school.
Take note that this pronouns can be
Singular - I, you, She he it
or
Plural - we, you, they

They can be the first person or the speaker,

second person or third person

Let’s try to replace proper nouns with subject

personal pronouns
1. Ray went to the mall yesterday, but the Ray
did not buy anything.
To avoid using his name twice in one sentence
let us replaces the antecedent.

Antecedent is the word a pronoun replaces,

which in this sentence is Ray.
Ray went to the mall yesterday, but the Ray did
In this sentence, we are talking about Ray. That not buy anything.
is why it is on the third person. Ray is masculine
so we are going to use “he”. Ray went to the
mall yesterday but he did not buy anything.
Antecedent is the word a pronoun replaces, which
To find a pronoun’s antecedent, ask yourself in this sentence is Ray.
what the pronoun refers to. In the first example,
what does here refers to, that is, who is the “he”
The “he” in the sentence is Ray, therefore Ray is
the antecedent.

Gina is a kind person, when Gina sees someone

in need Gina always does her best to help them.
Notice how many times we use Gina in the
sentence that’s why it sounds a little weird in this
scenario.
We can use the personal pronoun she to replace
the antecedent.
Gina is a kind person, when Gina sees someone in
need Gina always does her best to help them.

My friends and I will attend a party next week.

My friends and I will wear our favorite clothes for
that special day.

my friends and I?

We will use plural, first person, we.

We also have object or objective personal

pronouns.

We
The objective personal pronouns are:
me, you, him, her, it, us, and them.

This means that the pronoun is acting as an

object, not as a subject.

Again, take note that these pronouns can be

The objective personal pronouns are:
singular or plural.
me, you, him, her, it, us, and them.

They can be on the first person second person

or third person.
For example: Jake gave Amy a present.

Who is the receiver of the action?

It is Amy.

Amy is a girl so we will use the personal pronoun

her.

Amy!
Jake gave her a present.

Why did we not use the personal pronoun she?

pronoun.

Amy, in this example is not a subject but an

indirect object. because she is a subject personal pronoun.

2nd example: Will you please tell Mark and Jaden

to come in?

replace the proper noun?
