Prologue : Once a group of Sikh leaded by Baba Budha came to Guru Arjan Dev ji, with
folded hand they humbly said, ‘Dear Guru Ji, it is a well known practice that the the
name of the month is heard from a good and virtuous person on the first day of the
month. Please composed a hymn that contains the sermon name of the month and the
guidance for each month in order for the beings to attain salvation’. Guru Ji replied, ‘Guru
Nanak Dev Ji has composed the hymn called Barah Maha in Tukhari Rag, read and
understand the hymn. Read the Barah Maha in congregation on the first day of the
month’. Sikhs with folded hands said, ‘The composition uttered by Guru Nanak is beyond
our comprehension as it uttered with deep meanings. Be merciful and utter the same
hymn with simple words which can be understood easily while one is reading it.’
Guru Arjan Dev Ji accepted the request and composed the second Barah Maha containing
the meaning of the Barah Maha uttered by Guru Nanak in Tukhari Rag. The first stanza
(Pauri) contains a begining prayer for the completion of the composition and the last
stanza (Pauri) contains the appreciation prayer marking the conclusion of the hymn.

I have wondered in all ten direction including the four main direction (East, West, North,
South) and finally I have come to Almighty’s shelter after being exhausted (tired).
Question: If wise ones says that you have obtained the birth of human being then why
are you sad, Guru Ji answer while proving the wastage of human birth without the
Almighty’s meditation;

The human life without Almighty’s meditation is just like a cow without milk becomes
which becomes useless and as crop’s field withers away without water, therefore it does
not generates any income.
In the same manner, if one does not unite with Almighty after obtaining the human birth
then how can one obtain permenant form which has no birth and death?
Those antahkaran (House which means body) of the Kings (town) and the Poor (village)
ones are just like furnace in which the Almighty did not manifest and they have no peace.
It means that no matter how rich, how poor, educated, uneducated, etc. the effect is the
same when one fails to realise the truth.

Under the influence worldly desires, all the grooming, betel and all the tastes of desires
by which one has forgotten the Almighty means that all the distractive elements (self
beautification, toxication and worldly desires) including the physical body are temporary
which perishs along with this physical form. Human get indulged in appearance, taste of
tongue and fulfilling self created desires so much that he main task of this life is totally
ignored.
Without the attainment of Almighty who is the Master, all the friends and loved ones
seems to be the angels of death which means other then Almighty all are in fear.
Almighty is the only fearless one, therefore all fears perishes away when Almighty is
obtained otherwise everything becomes the contributing factor to fear.

By the month of Chet (Mid-March to Mid April) Guru Ji says that remember Almighty
(Govind means the life of all sensors) in order to obtain a lots of bliss.
Note: In accordance to the Indian Calender which is based on lunar, the month of Chet is
the first month of the year, hence the New Year.
The ability to utter the Almighty’s name with tongue is obtained by joining the company
of saints which also means that the uttering of Almighty’s name is obtained by being a
part of true congregation (SatSangat).
Only the coming of those is fruitful (counted) in this world who has obtained their
Almighty.
To stay alive for a period of eye flicker without remembering Almighty, such life is
totally in vain (useless).

The Almighty’s existence is contained completely in the water, land, earth, sky and also
in the forest means He is omnipresent and there is nothing without Him.
How can ever one be able to measure the total pain for not remembering such Almighty?
means that one will have to bare a lot of pain for not remembering Almighty during the
life time.
The ones who has uttered the Almighty’s name and experienced the bliss, they are of
supreme fortune (Bhag- the returns of good deeds which comes from Almighty just like a
seed of deed can be buried in the soil liked body and care can be taken but the growth is
all dependant on Almighty, therefore we can only perform our best through our best

The worldly supports such as son, spouse and wealth never follows along the being (jeev)
to the next journey (after death) whereas Almighty supports all the way as he is the only
one beyond death.
The whole universe is perishing away while being entangled in the mesh of worldly
attachements of false occupations.
Without Almighty’s Name, all the other conditional virtues deeds performed with
intention of fulfilling certain desires shall be looted (robbed) by the angel of death during
the after death journey.
This life shall be totally ruined by forgetting the inspirator Almighty as there is no other
protector then Almighty himself.

Only those beings (jeev) is worth to be praise whom the Almighty has accept them as his
own means that such beings praise reflects the Almighty’s greatness.
If Almighty can be obtained with our own efforts without a True Guru then why should
ever this being (jeev) cry in his separation? means that the main reason for all the pains is
the separation from Almighty created by our ownself as accepting worldly materials as
our own instead of Almighty. Almighty is the one we belongs to and He is the only one
we own.
Question: How can we obtain Almighty? Guru Ji explains as follows;
Guru Ji says that the ones who have obtain the company of saints they are accepted by
Almighty and delighted with eternal bliss.

Through the month of Jeth, Guru Ji says that those obtain the blissful Almighty whose
forehead has supreme fortune (Note: Bhag or fortune is fruits of the deeds that one has
performed during and before the lifetime which determines all the happiness and
sadness).
The heat of Harh (Mid-June to Mid–July) is experaince by those who are not close to
Almighty husband means the month of Harh is painful for those who did not obtain
Almighty.
Those who have forsaken the universal source of life (Jag Jiwan-Almighty) and universal

Such people ruins in doubt and know for a fact that the noose of death angel remains
around their neck means that those who lived their life with a doubt that happiness is
obtained from the worldly possessions and they seeks peace in worldly material one after
one and finally fails to obtain happiness as every worldly happiness comes along with
various pains from which the greatest is the untolerated pain during and after death.
One is subjected to consume (go through in this lifetime) in accordance to the deeds
performed just like one only reaps whatever is planted and all the previous deeds are
written on the forehead which becomes the motivation factor for all the deeds performed
in this life time.
When the night of life time passes away then this being (jeev) liked wife regrets and

life time they are released as being (jeev) is only entitled to those deeds commited with

Therefore one should humbly request and pray as follows;

Guru Ji explains the reality of the relationship that are made in this world are pre-
determined based on previous deeds and the being (jeev) is not able create any union
(sanjog) nor separation (vijog) on his/her own choice. In fact the relationships are
fashioned in such manner for beings (jeev) to resolve or repay all the deeds committed
previously. Therefore, we need to understand this fact in order to be grateful to Almighty
for the opportunity to realise the ultimate truth which is beyond our preception of mind.
With great fortune, Almighty is attained then all the pain of separation disappears. Guru
Ji pointed out clearly that the root of all pain is the separation from Almighty, therefore
one will remain in pain until he/she realises that our true form is Atma which is the
Almighty Himself. Pleasure and sorrow in life is experienced when we assume ourselves
as a separate identity due to the ego within, in order to get rid of this ego Guru Ji
demonstrates the method of pleading as follows;
Guru Ji says, Dear Almighty, please free me from the entanglements of desires and protect
me.
Through the month of Ketek Guru Ji says, all the worries disappears when the company

Therefore their pains never depart and they fall under the death angel’s cluthes.
Alternatively those who have uttered Almighty’s praises knowing Him as their own they
always stay awake (alert) in Almighty’s meditation. Guru Ji explains that the ones who
builds a close relationship with Almighty, they do not have to remember Him formally
but the rememberance remains consistently within them as the ones we love truly their
rememberance keeps the mind alert at all times, Almighty’s rememberance enlightens the
mind.
Their Antahkaran is filled with jewels of asceticism (free from worldly desires), emeralds

therefore attending the congregation where Almighty’s Name is recited is more
meaningful then pilgrimage .
Guru Ji says one should concentrate and listen to Almighty’s Name and donate the same
