1 Introduction
SINAMICS S120 has a modular design, and addresses complex drive tasks in the
widest range of industrial applications. A user can select a solution that best
corresponds to his specific requirements from a wide variety of components and
functions that are harmonized and coordinated with one another.
SINAMICS S120 has Line Modules and Motor Modules that cover a wide range of
power ratings. They are available in various formats: Booksize modules up to
120kW, and chassis modules for higher power ranges.
The installation of Line Modules Chassis or Booksize, with any number of Motor
Modules Booksize, is described in the manuals available.
The appropriate documents can be called up at the following address:
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/ps/13231/man?ml=de
For space reasons, some applications require the use of Active Line Modules
Booksize; however, the available power range with a single Active Line Module
Booksize is insufficient for the application.
This document describes the combination of a parallel configuration of two Active
Line Modules Booksize with several Motor Modules Booksize connected to a
common DC link.
Note The device manuals for the SINAMICS S120 system still remain valid.
1.1 Preconditions
The preconditions for connecting Active Line Modules Booksize in parallel are as
follows:
• Same type
• Same frame size (55, 80 and 120 kW Active Line Modules)
• Same firmware version
• As minimum, the following firmware versions:
– SINAMICS from V5.2
– SINUMERIK from V4.91
• The use of Voltage Sensing Modules VSM10 is optional
• Can be used in the Active Mode, Smart Mode and Extended Smart-Mode of
the ALM
• Can be operated with NCU/NX or CU320-2
• The commissioning engineer sees only a larger Active Line Module

All of the components, with the exception of the motors, must be accommodated in
a common control cabinet; this either comprises a single control cabinet or several
control cabinet sections mechanically connected with one another. All electrical
connections between the components (with the exception of the motor) are subject
to the conditions for wiring in control cabinets/panels in accordance with UL 508A.
The parallel connection of two Active Line Modules Booksize must be supplied
from a common line supply connection and controlled synchronously by a common
Control Unit. It is not permissible that the modules are connected to galvanically
isolated line supplies.
1Using HFD line reactors with damping resistor instead of Active Interface Modules is not
possible in conjunction with a parallel device configuration.
Note Any non-semiconductor fuse, Class J and T from any manufacturer can be used.

1) Leading opening contact t > 10 ms; 24 V DC and ground must be connected for operation (when using a VSM10 V, the leading opening contact can be eliminated)
2) Digital input (DI) or digital output (DO) controlled by the Control Unit
3) No additional load permitted downstream of the line contactor
4) The current carrying capacity of the digital output (DO) must be observed; an output coupling device may have to be used
5) Fan unit for Active Line Modules 80 kW and 120 kW The fan unit is supplied together with the Active Line Module
6) It is only possible to omit the overcurrent protective device if the cables to the Voltage Sensing Module are routed so that no short-circuit or ground fault can be expected under normal operating conditions (short-circuit proof cable routing)

For Motor Modules Booksize C/D type, the current carrying capacity can be
increased across the board from 100 A to 200 A by replacing the existing 4 mm DC
link jumpers with 6 mm thick DC link jumpers (6SL3162-2BB00-0AA0). The existing
M4 connecting screws can be reused when making the replacement.
Fig. 4-2
Note For this particular application, carefully observe the average power per DC link
segment as listed in the table above. The maximum average power of 120 kW
for each DC link segment in the arrangements in the following chapter is only
possible when using busbars with a current carrying capacity of 200 A.
The average power of the group is the sum of the actual average powers of the
Motor Modules installed in the group and which operate simultaneously.

In this arrangement, the infeed units are located in the middle, and the Motor
Modules are arranged to the right and to the left starting from the highest power to
the lowest power. It is not permissible that the maximum average power of the
Motor Modules at each side (to the right and to the left) exceeds an average power
of 120 kW. The busbars must be dimensioned for a current carrying capacity of
200 A.
It is not permissible that the actual current carrying capacity of the internal DC links
of the individual Motor Modules is exceeded.
Fig. 4-4
In this line-up, the Motor Modules are arranged in three groups; whereby, the
maximum average power of each group must not exceed an average power of
120 kW. It is not permissible that the average total power of all Motor Modules
© Siemens AG 2023 All rights reserved
exceeds the rated power for a parallel connection. The busbars of the Motor
Modules between the Active Line Modules must be dimensioned for a current
carrying capacity of 200 A.
It is not permissible that the actual current carrying capacity of the internal DC links
of the individual Motor Modules is exceeded.
Note When a DC link rectifier adapter and DC busbars are used, the limit values for
radio interference suppression according to EN 61800-3 can no longer be
guaranteed (see the equipment manual).
4.5.2 Drive line-up comprising two groups connected via DC link adapter
Fig. 4-5
© Siemens AG 2023 All rights reserved
In this arrangement, there are two groups, each with one Line Module and
additional Motor Modules - separately arranged starting from the highest power
and going down to the lowest power. It is not permissible that the maximum
average power of the Motor Modules in each group exceeds an average power of
120 kW. Generally, a DC link adapter for lateral connection (6SL3162-2BM01-
0AA0) is used to connect the DC link cables to a group of Motor Modules Booksize.
If the module to the right is a 150 mm, 200 mm or 300 mm module, then a DC link
rectifier adapter 6SL3162-2BM00-0AA0 can also be used to supply the group.
The cables to connect the two groups must be dimensioned for a voltage of 720 V
DC and a current of 200 A.
It is not permissible that the actual current carrying capacity of the internal DC links
of the individual Motor Modules is exceeded.

equivalent current of 400 A
8US1922-2BA00 Profiled cover for busbars
Maximum clearance for the busbar supports: 800 mm
To ensure adequate mechanical stability, the busbars must be mounted in the
outer profiles of the busbar supports (L1 and L3).
Connecting terminal set 8US1921-1AA00 must be used to connect the Line
Modules to the busbar system.
If the system is installed using these components, then an SCCR of 100kA can be
achieved for the complete system.
Other components can be used. In this case, additional UL/CSA investigations
must be performed regarding the final end user application.
Connecting individual Motor Modules Booksize and Motor Module Booksize groups
More detailed information about installing Motor Modules Booksize is provided at
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/de/view/109751877
The cables from the Active Line Modules to the busbar system must be
dimensioned for a voltage of 720 V DC and a current of 200 A.
The cables from the busbar system to the Motor Modules – or the group of Motor
Modules – must be dimensioned corresponding to their rated currents.
If Motor Modules Booksize are connected in groups, the DC link busbars integrated
in the modules are used to establish the electrical connection.
The average power of the group is the sum of the actual average powers of the
Motor Modules installed in the group and which operate simultaneously. The
cables must be selected corresponding to the maximum average power. Generally,
a DC link adapter for lateral connection (6SL3162-2BM01-0AA0) must be used to
connect the DC link cables to a group of Motor Modules Booksize. If the module to
the right is a 150 mm, 200 mm or 300 mm wide module, then a DC link rectifier
adapter 6SL3162-2BM00-0AA0 can also be used to supply the group.
It is not permissible that the actual current carrying capacity of the internal DC links
of the individual Motor Modules is exceeded.
