1 Introduction

1 Introduction
SINAMICS S120 has a modular design, and addresses complex drive tasks in the
widest range of industrial applications. A user can select a solution that best
corresponds to his specific requirements from a wide variety of components and
functions that are harmonized and coordinated with one another.
SINAMICS S120 has Line Modules and Motor Modules that cover a wide range of
power ratings. They are available in various formats: Booksize modules up to
120kW, and chassis modules for higher power ranges.
The installation of Line Modules Chassis or Booksize, with any number of Motor
Modules Booksize, is described in the manuals available.
The appropriate documents can be called up at the following address:
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/ps/13231/man?ml=de
For space reasons, some applications require the use of Active Line Modules
Booksize; however, the available power range with a single Active Line Module
Booksize is insufficient for the application.
This document describes the combination of a parallel configuration of two Active
Line Modules Booksize with several Motor Modules Booksize connected to a
common DC link.
Note The device manuals for the SINAMICS S120 system still remain valid.

All of the components, with the exception of the motors, must be accommodated in
a common control cabinet; this either comprises a single control cabinet or several
control cabinet sections mechanically connected with one another. All electrical
connections between the components (with the exception of the motor) are subject
to the conditions for wiring in control cabinets/panels in accordance with UL 508A.
The parallel connection of two Active Line Modules Booksize must be supplied
from a common line supply connection and controlled synchronously by a common
Control Unit. It is not permissible that the modules are connected to galvanically
isolated line supplies.

Line Modules Booksize in parallel
3.1 Active Line Modules Booksize
The following table lists the possible parallel configurations of Active Line Modules
Booksize and the associated components required. Parallel operation is only
permissible when using identical modules. For booksize, it is only permissible that
2 modules are connected in parallel. All Line Modules must be supplied from the
same line supply and feed a common DC link. All Active Line Modules require a
separate Active Interface Module1.
For parallel operation,
• optionally one or several Voltage Sensing Modules VSM10
(6SL3052-0AA00-3AA1)
• two Basic Line Filters for Active Line Modules Booksize
can be used.

When power units are connected in parallel, all of the specified power values must
be reduced (derating).
For SINAMICS S120 Active Line Modules, the power reduction (derating) is 5%.
The resulting values of the rated and peak powers as well as the DC link current at
600 V DC are listed in Table 3-1 .
The line-side currents of the individual devices correspond to what is specified in
the catalog.
The total cable lengths for two Active Line Modules Booksize connected in parallel
corresponds to the total cable length of the individual devices as listed in the
manual; the value does not increase.
It is recommended that symmetrical power cabling between the common line
connection point and the Active Line Modules is used (same type of cable with the
same cross-section and the same length).
The documentation for the Active Interface Modules and Active Line Modules
mentioned above is available at
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/de/view/109754297, the documentation
for the VSM10 at https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/de/view/109754294.

1Using HFD line reactors with damping resistor instead of Active Interface Modules is not
possible in conjunction with a parallel device configuration.

4.2 Dimensioning the protective conductor

The protective conductors for the Active Interface Module, Active Line Module,
Motor Module, capacitance module, Control Supply Module and Braking Module
must have a minimum cross-section of 25 mm² according to IEC or AWG 4
according to UL.
Note Other options for dimensioning protective conductors for IEC applications are
provided in equipment manual "Power units Booksize" in Chapter "Protective
conductor connection and equipotential bonding".

4.3 Current carrying capacity of the DC link busbars

The current carrying capacity of DC link busbars must be carefully observed for the
configuration and arrangement of the drive line-up. The maximum current carrying
capacity of the DC link busbars is different according to the module width.

4 Arrangement of components and devices

NOTICE Component damage caused by excessively low current carrying capacity

of the DC link busbars
The DC link busbars of the individual components have in some cases different
current carrying capacities (current ratings). Operating the DC link busbars
above the specified current is not permissible, and can result in component
damage.
When configuring the drive lineup, carefully observe the current carrying
capacities of the individual components. If required, replace the DC link jumper
or reduce the load.

Note For this particular application, carefully observe the average power per DC link
segment as listed in the table above. The maximum average power of 120 kW
for each DC link segment in the arrangements in the following chapter is only
possible when using busbars with a current carrying capacity of 200 A.
The average power of the group is the sum of the actual average powers of the
Motor Modules installed in the group and which operate simultaneously.

Fig. 4-5
© Siemens AG 2023 All rights reserved

In this arrangement, there are two groups, each with one Line Module and
additional Motor Modules - separately arranged starting from the highest power
and going down to the lowest power. It is not permissible that the maximum
average power of the Motor Modules in each group exceeds an average power of
120 kW. Generally, a DC link adapter for lateral connection (6SL3162-2BM01-
0AA0) is used to connect the DC link cables to a group of Motor Modules Booksize.
If the module to the right is a 150 mm, 200 mm or 300 mm module, then a DC link
rectifier adapter 6SL3162-2BM00-0AA0 can also be used to supply the group.
The cables to connect the two groups must be dimensioned for a voltage of 720 V
DC and a current of 200 A.
It is not permissible that the actual current carrying capacity of the internal DC links
of the individual Motor Modules is exceeded.

The busbars connected to the Line Modules must be:

• for UL applications: installed acc. to UL 508A (only internal wiring, no field
wiring)
• protected against mechanical damage
Example for DC link busbars: Siemens busbar system 8US
Details on the Siemens busbar system and its components, such as connection
modules, mounting elements, covers etc. are provided through the Siemens
Industry Online Support (SIOS).

It is not permissible that the current carrying capacity of the busbars is lower than
the sum of the rated output currents of the Line Modules connected in parallel.
The following components are recommended for the common DC busbar system
and as total system for the UL/CSA market:
Table 4-2

8US1922-2BA00 Profiled cover for busbars
Maximum clearance for the busbar supports: 800 mm
To ensure adequate mechanical stability, the busbars must be mounted in the
outer profiles of the busbar supports (L1 and L3).
Connecting terminal set 8US1921-1AA00 must be used to connect the Line
Modules to the busbar system.
If the system is installed using these components, then an SCCR of 100kA can be
achieved for the complete system.
Other components can be used. In this case, additional UL/CSA investigations
must be performed regarding the final end user application.

Connecting individual Motor Modules Booksize and Motor Module Booksize groups
More detailed information about installing Motor Modules Booksize is provided at
https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/de/view/109751877
The cables from the Active Line Modules to the busbar system must be
dimensioned for a voltage of 720 V DC and a current of 200 A.
The cables from the busbar system to the Motor Modules – or the group of Motor
Modules – must be dimensioned corresponding to their rated currents.
If Motor Modules Booksize are connected in groups, the DC link busbars integrated
in the modules are used to establish the electrical connection.
The average power of the group is the sum of the actual average powers of the
Motor Modules installed in the group and which operate simultaneously. The
cables must be selected corresponding to the maximum average power. Generally,
a DC link adapter for lateral connection (6SL3162-2BM01-0AA0) must be used to
connect the DC link cables to a group of Motor Modules Booksize. If the module to
the right is a 150 mm, 200 mm or 300 mm wide module, then a DC link rectifier
adapter 6SL3162-2BM00-0AA0 can also be used to supply the group.
It is not permissible that the actual current carrying capacity of the internal DC links
of the individual Motor Modules is exceeded.

5.2 Features relating to Active Line Module Booksize

connected in parallel
The main features of a parallel connection are as follows:
• Parallel connection of two Active Line Modules
• A common Control Unit3 controls and monitors an infeed unit connected in
parallel
• Commissioning is simple as special parameterization is not required. Only the
parallel connection itself has to be selected or this is identified for an automatic
configuration.
• Using p7000 ff., individual power units can be parameterized and diagnosed
(troubleshooting).
A parallel connection comprising two Active Line Modules Booksize must be
synchronously controlled from a common Control Unit. It is not permissible that the
modules are connected to galvanically isolated line supplies.
Active Line Modules in a parallel connection may also be operated in the Smart
Mode and Extended Smart Mode.

3 The Control Unit can be a CU320-2, SINAMICS Integrated for SINUMERIK or a NX

Automatic configuration (online)

For an automatic configuration, a parallel connection is automatically created for
two suitable Active Line Modules.
Active Line Modules connected in parallel are treated just like an appropriately
larger Active Line Module.
This means that for a parallel connection, control words, status words and status
values do not to differ from those of an individual device; suitable "total values" are
derived from the individual values of the power units. Several display parameters
are additionally available for the parallel connection.

5If additional functions are used, please observe the rules and instructions for avoiding
overloads in the drive functions function manual; for example, the topology in combination with
Safety Extended Functions must be limited to 4 Motor Modules per one DRIVE-CLiQ line

5.6 Commissioning with SINUMERIK Create MyConfig

5.6.1 Commissioning variants

The following 3 commissioning variants are available with Create MyConfig (CMC):

Commissioning using the SINAMICS device configuration

The SINAMICS topology is appropriately wired in CMC. In SINUMERIK Operate,
the SINAMICS device configuration is performed as "Automatic configuration".
Create MyConfig automatically starts to execute the package.
While the package is being executed, various parameters, component names and
assignments are entered. This data had been previously configured in CMC Expert
and CMC Topo.

Commissioning using the user-specified topology

The specifications such as wiring, article number and component names are
configured in CMC Topo and entered in SINAMICS. The wiring must match the
configuration.
An "Automatic configuration" is not performed.

Commissioning using the extended user-specified topology

© Siemens AG 2023 All rights reserved

In addition to the SINAMICS wiring diagram, this topology type also contains NC
and DRV data. The "Extended user-specified topology" is predominantly used for
an existing machine when services required.
Note More detailed information on configuring and commissioning using the CMC
engineering software is provided in the SINUMERIK Create MyConfig operating
manual

5.7 Configuring parallel connections via parameter

From the perspective of the higher-level control system, the parallel connection of
infeed units behaves exactly the same as when controlling a single infeed unit,
whose power is the same as the total power of the individual infeeds connected in
parallel, minus the derating specified above.
This means that for a parallel connection, control words, status words and status
values do not to differ from those of an individual device; suitable "total values" are
derived from the individual values of the power units. Several display parameters
are additionally available for the parallel connection.
In the case of a fault, power units can be activated and deactivated - for example,
to replace a failed power unit. The power units can be individually monitored and
parameterized:
• The power units can be individually monitored and parameterized:
• Using p0125, you activate or deactivate a power unit from the topology.
• With p0895, you specifically activate or deactivate power units via an
interconnected digital input (BI).
• The number of currently active power units in a parallel connection is displayed
in r7000.
• After a fault or replacement, parameter p7001 allows you to specifically
deactivate or activate connected power units.
© Siemens AG 2023 All rights reserved

• The circulating currents of U, V, W at the power units are displayed in

parameters r7050, r7051 and r7052.
• Overload states and various temperature states in the power units can be
displayed in parameters from r7200 up to r7219.
Other parameters relevant for the operation and parameterization of power units
can be taken from the SINAMICS S120/S150 List Manual from parameter r7002 or
from p0125 onwards.

Operating state of power units connected in parallel

Fault messages and alarms from A05000 or F05000 onwards indicate faults in a
power unit.
Power unit faults are stored in the fault buffer and can be read as a fault value
using parameter r0949 (interpreted decimally). This fault value corresponds to the
drive object number in the drive line-up topology. The number of the fault that has
occurred is stored in parameter r0945.
The operating state of the infeed is displayed using the front LEDs.
The power unit for a specific drive can be identified using parameter p0124. During
p0124[0...n] = 1, the LED READY on the power unit concerned flashes
green/orange or red/orange at 2 Hz. For parallel connections the parameter index
is assigned to one power unit in each case.
