I. Matching Type. Match items under Column A with items under Column B. Write the letter of your
choice on the blanks provided. (1 point each; 5 points total)

Column A Column B

A 2. history of gonorrhea b. enabling factor
C 3. recent involvement in a rave party c. precipitating factor
B 4. workplace culture of engaging in sexual activity d. reinforcing factor
D 5. having multiple sex partners e. necessary cause
f. risk factor

II. Odd Member Out. Identify the “odd member” in each of the given groups (1 pt.). Justify why such an
item is the “odd member” (1 pt.) and justify why or how the other items are related to each other (1 pt.).
(3 pts. for each number; 15 points total)

1. posters on proper respiratory hygiene, getting enough sleep, exercising, social distancing during cold
season
Posters on proper respiratory hygiene – The posters are a community approach to changing
risk factors related to respiratory diseases in the whole population, whereas all of the other three are
individual and personal practices that an individual can do to prevent getting respiratory diseases.

2. having an annual dental checkup, applying dental sealants to the chewing surfaces of molars,
drinking fluoridated water, filling a broken tooth

already broken tooth, while having dental checkups, applying dental sealants, and drinking fluoridated
water are all primary measures of prevention against broken teeth and dental diseases.

3. dietary restriction, neuromuscular exercise therapy, knee reconstructive surgery, wearing personal

Wearing personal protective equipment when playing – This is an example of primary
prevention against injury or disability as injury has not occurred yet, while the rest are examples of
tertiary prevention practices as they are interventions performed after an established knee injury.

4. using condoms during sex, taking a Papanicolau test, vaccinating against HPV, avoiding smoking

chemotherapy
Reducing consumption of processed meats – This is a primary preventive measure to
prevent any lifestyle diseases while the rest are tertiary preventive measures against lifestyle diseases
such as cancer.

III. Diagramming. Make a probabilistic or sufficient-cause model for obesity. Cite five (5) possible
causes in your diagram and discuss briefly how these multiple contributing determinants may act
together to produce a given instance of the disease. (1 point each for a cause and 1 point for the
explanation; 10 points total)

Sufficient-cause model for Obesity

Genetic predisposition Inactive lifestyle

High-calorie food Insufficient sleep
Unhealthy eating habits

Each of these factors can contribute to a person becoming obese in their lifespan, and are
often involved with each other in the onset of the disease. First, a person can be genetically
predisposed to obesity if there are obese individuals within their family history. Second, eating mostly
high-calorie food combined with an inactive lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits means an individual is
eating way more food than the calories they burn which causes rapid weight gain. Finally, insufficient
sleep prevents an individual from losing weight by increasing their cravings and making them more
prone to overeating. Overall, when all of these factors come together, a person becomes obese.
