IV. Lesson Proper
A. Discussion of the Lesson
(The teacher will now discuss the Personality and Sports.)
We always hear the saying ‘no two persons are alike’
which means we are all unique. My question is, what
(All students will answer.)
makes you unique? (All students will be called to give one
characteristics that makes them unique.) “My openness to experience”
“I have a high pitch voice”
“I am hard worker“
“I am very good communicator”
“I am not afraid of failure”
All of those characteristics that makes you unique is called
personality. Not just your characteristics but also your
behaviors, thoughts, and emotions.

As a future coach, why do you think we need to study the

personality of our athletes? (The teacher will call for
volunteer/s to answer.)
It is important to study the personality of our athletes for
us to work better with them.

Great idea! How about the others?

It helps the coaches to know what approach they will use

to communicate or work with their athletes.

Very good! No two athletes are alike so we need to study

each of our athlete’s personality. Not just with one athlete
but all of them so can work with them more effectively.
Each of them deserves individualized attention to reach
their peak performance. Knowing the personalities of
athletes allows coaches to create balanced teams,
considering factors like leadership styles, communication
preferences and how individual interact with a group.

schematic view of personality structure.)

In my opinion, psychological core is our inner self which

The most basic level of your personality is called the

psychological core. The deepest component, it includes
your attitudes and values, interests and motives, and
beliefs about yourself and your self-worth. In essence, the
psychological core represents the centerpiece of your
personality and is “the real you,” not who you want others
to think you are. (The teacher will further elaborate the
psychological core.

Correct! For example, if you consistently respond to

social situations by being quiet and shy, you are
likely to be introverted, not extroverted. However, if
someone observed you being quiet at a party and
from that evidence alone concluded that you were
introverted, that person could well be mistaken—it
may have been the particular party situation that

caused you to be quiet. Your quietness may not have
been a typical response.

“That’s right. As a coach you need to stay positive so

you can help to motivate the team members and
ensure that the team goes on to win successfully.”

Do you understand class?

Yes, ma’am!

Next is Role-related behavior. Do you have any idea about

this class? (The teacher will call for volunteer/s to
answer.)
In my opinion, role-related behavior is how you act based
on your role in the society or your environment.

That’s right! How you act based on what you

perceive your social situation to be is called role-
related behavior. This behavior is the most
changeable aspect of personality: Your behavior
changes as your perceptions of the environment
change. Different situations require playing different
roles. In this society, we have different roles to portray. Do these
roles ca have a conflict with each other?
Do you understand? Do you have any questions

Yes, roles can conflict with each other. For example,

a parent who is coaching her child’s soccer team
might feel a conflict between her coaching and
parenting

roles. Perhaps, they may find themselves being bias
and giving their own child preference over the others.

Do you understand class? Yes, ma’am

Okay class now let’s study the personality from five
viewpoints do you have any background knowledge about
our topic? (The teacher will call for volunteers to answer.)
(The students will answer.)
Ma’am, for me in my own perspective our topic is all
about the different approaches. That helps to understand
the personality and behavior of a person.

Great answer class! Thank you for sharing your idea to

your classmate.

The first personality from five viewpoints that I’m going

to discussed is psychodynamic approach to psychology
focuses on the internal, unconscious mental forces that
individuals are largely unaware of, but drive emotions and
actions. Unconscious psychological activities include
underlying desires and anxieties that are present deep
within the mind yet influence personality and behavior.
They found that sport helped address this individual’s
sense of inferiority that resulted from social isolation in
his childhood. At the same time, however, his success in
sport did not totally compensate for his feelings of
inferiority and, in some ways, allowed him to avoid some
challenges (e.g., developing romantic relationships) that
young adults must face. Thus, this individual’s present
functioning could be explained by conflicts and
unresolved childhood issues. Although sport served a
positive role in his life, it allowed him to avoid other
important issues unconsciously.

Any questions or clarification class? None, ma’am!

Are you sure class? before we continue our discussion Yes, ma’am! we really understand the psychodynamic
approach.

Very good! Since you understand the psychodynamic it’s

time to move to our second approach that is trait approach.
Do you have any idea what is trait approach? (The teacher
will call for volunteers to answer.)
(The students will answer.)
I believe that the trait approach is a way of studying
personality that places emphasis on the traits of an
individual as markers of personality.

Nice answer class! Trait approach is a way of studying

personality.

Any other answer class

(The students raise their hands to answer.)
Ma’am, I think trait approach focuses on individual
differences.

Very well said! When we say trait approach focused on

individual differences and the interaction and combination
of personality traits are what makes individual
personalities unique. Traits are considered to predispose a
person to act a certain way regardless of the situation or
circumstances. If an athlete is
For example, competitive, for example, he will be
predisposed to playing hard and giving his all regardless
of the situation or score. However, at the same time, a
predisposition does not mean that the athlete will always
act this way; it simply means that the athlete is likely to be
competitive in sport situations.

Do you understand class?

Yes, ma’am! We believe that each and every one of us
have differences.

Do you have any questions about trait approach?
None, ma’am

If none let’s proceed to our third approach that is

situational approach, do you have any idea about this
approach? (The teacher will call for volunteers to answer.)
(The students will answer.)
Ma’am, in my own words it is thought the situation and
environment have a stronger influence on the
characteristics shown during sport than the trait
characteristics would suggest.
Good answer! Thank you for participating in our class.
The situation approach argues that behavior is determined
largely by the situation or environment. It draws from
social learning theory (Bandura, 1977a), which explains
behavior in terms of observational learning (modeling)
and social reinforcement (feedback). This approach holds
that environmental influences and reinforcements shape
the way you behave. You might 9 act confident, for
instance, in one situation but tentative in another,
regardless of your particular personality traits.
Furthermore, if the influence of the environment is strong
enough, the effect of personality traits will be minimal.

Any clarifications or question class?

“None, ma’am!

Are you sure class? Because we will not move forward to

our next approach if you don’t understand something.
Yes, ma’am!

Our next approach is interactional approach The

interactional approach. Do you have any idea about this (The students will answer.)
approach? (The teacher will call for volunteers to answer.)
The interactional approach holds that situational
characteristics play an important role in determining our
behavior.

Nice answer class!
When we talk about interactional approach considers the
situation and person of behavior—that is, as variables that
together determine behavior. In other words, knowing
both an individual’s psychological traits and the particular
situation is helpful in understanding behavior. Not only do
personal traits and situational factors independently
determine behavior, but at times they interact or mix with
each other in unique ways to influence behavior.

Any clarifications or questions class?

None, ma’am!

The last approach that I’m going to discussed is all about

phenomenological approach.

Do you have any knowledge about this approach?

None, ma’am!

Since you don’t have any idea about the

phenomenological approach lets discussed it
phenomenological approach is the most popular
orientation taken today (Vealey, 2002). Like the
interactional view, the phenomenological approach
contends that behavior is best determined by accounting
for both situations and personal characteristics. However,
instead of focusing on fixed traits or dispositions as the
primary determinants of behavior, the psychologist
examines the person’s understanding and interpretation of
herself and her environment. Hence, an individual’s
subjective experiences and personal views of the world
and of herself are seen as critical.

Yes, ma’am! I really understand that when we talk about

Do you understand class? phenomenological approach a form of qualitative enquiry
that emphasizes experiential, lived aspects of a particular
construct.

Great job class!

(The teacher will now discuss the Measuring Personality
Traits)

Class, do you believe that people has different personality?

(All students will answer)

Yes ma’am!
Alright, but is there anyone who can tell me the reason
behind your answer YES

(The students will volunteer through raising their hands.

The chosen student/s will state their answer.)
Each individual has different personalities because we
have some unique traits we can never be alike even if how
tried we copy the natures of others
All your answers are correct, Personality is someone’s
characteristics, how they think, behave and feel.
Have you ever found yourself taking an online quiz to find
out what kind of animal you would be?
Yes, ma’am
Well, most of these quizzes don’t hold any significant
meaning, but they do highlight our desire to categorize
and understand our individual personalities
Anyone form the class who knows how we measure our
personality?
(The students will raise their hand. The chosen student
will answer.)
We can measure personality by asking respondents to rate
themselves based on a given situation

Exactly! Measuring Personality can be achieved using a

question based model, asking how to rate themselves
based on their reactions to given situations, generally on a
sliding or Likert scale.
(The students will listen on the discussion)

One more thing personality assessments are helpful for

many things, it can help us to learn about ourselves,
understand our differences with others and reach a better
understanding of human behavior.

(The teacher will now discuss the Trait and State
Measures)

Now, I have a question. Can you differentiate state and

traits? What are their difference and similarities? Anyone
from the class? Traits are about characteristics while state means
condition or situation.

Exactly, A trait is considered to be something that is part

of an individual’s personality and therefore a long term
characteristic of an individual that shows through their
behavior, actions and feelings. For example, I am a
confident and responsible person. I’m stating that these
attributes are part of who I am.

Can you judge your friend situation based on their state?

Why? (The teacher will call for volunteer/s to answer). No, ma’am, we can’t easily judge any person who has a
different state or condition from us. Because we are
suffering from different things and maybe for us it’s
simple but for them for some reason it’s hard and it’s quite
depressing.

Very Good! A state on the other hand is a temporary

condition that they are experiencing for a short period of
time. After the state has passes they will return to another
condition. For example someone who says, I feel nervous
about doing this’ are describing states.

On the other hand, In a sport sense, Vealey (1986)

emphasized the disparities between trait and state trust
steps. Trait approaches in relation to personality and
behavior are consistent therefore if you are an individual
who has a high level of anxiety you would be more
anxious whereas state approaches change depending on
the situation.

Do you understand class? Yes, ma’am!

(The teacher will now discuss the Situation-Specific
Measures)
Can you please read the context (The teacher will call for
volunteer to read the topic.)
General scales provide some useful information about
personality traits and states, situation-specific measures
predict behavior more reliably for given situations because
they consider both the personality of the participant and
the specific situation (interactional approach).

The situation specific measures. For example, there is an

exam and you are stressed or your feeling anxious about
that particular exam, but in other subjects that you have an
exam, it is not like that. So now Sarason (1975) she
devised a situationally specific scale for measuring in how
a person usually feels before taking exams.

(The teacher will now discuss the Sport- Specific Measures)

The regular monitoring of physical fitness and sport-
specific performance is important in elite sports to
increase the likelihood of success in competition. Sport
specific tests provide a more accurate, valid, and reliable
measure of personality traits and states in sport and
exercise settings.

If we will compare general and sport-specific measures of

psychological factors. General psychological inventories
measure general personality traits and states without a
specific reference to sport or physical activity whereas
sport-specific inventories measures behavior in a specific
behavior in specific situations.

(The teacher will now discuss the role in Understanding

Personality.)
First of all; Why do you think understanding ones
personality is important? Student will be called to give
their opinion about the question.

(Student will answer)
Understanding one’s personality is important because it is
the way on how to get along with that kind of person and
to avoid having a conflict over things that you know
someone will not like.

Okay! That’s correct, because knowing his/her personality

will help you to find out if that person whether it will be
good or bad when he/she becomes your friend.

Now! Let’s continue our discussion about the role in

understanding personality.

We have 5 role in understanding personality which is;

 Consider both personality traits and situations.

 Be informed consumer.

 Be a good communicator.

 Be a good observer.

 Be knowledgeable about mental strategies.

Consider both personality traits and situations.

 To understand someone’s behavior, consider both

the person and the situation. Along with
understanding personality, always take into
account the particular situation in which you are
teaching or coaching.
So, In your opinion, why is it important to consider both
personality traits and situations when it comes to teaching
and coaching? Student will be called to give their opinion
about the question
( Student will answer)
In my opinion, this serves as a way to give a second
chance if your student makes a mistake or has a problem.

That’s right, Also considering their situations and
personality traits can built respect between student and
teacher but give consideration if they deserve it.

Next is Be an informed consumer.

 To know how and when to use personality tests,

understand the ethics and guidelines for
personality testing. This chapter has provided
some guidelines. As a professional, it will be your
responsibility to understand the dos and don’ts of
personality testing.
Personality tests are often used in psychology to help
refine diagnoses as well as in business to assess potential
candidates and help build cohesive teams. They can also
help individuals better understand their strengths and
weaknesses so that they can become the best version of
themselves.
Do you understand class?

Yes, ma’am!

Next is Be a good communicator.

 Although formal personality testing can disclose a

great deal about people, so can sincere and open
communication. Asking questions and being a
good listener can go a long way toward
establishing rapport and finding out about an
individual’s personality and preferences.
“How do you think being good communicator can change (Student will answer)
a person perspective in life? (Student will be called to give
their opinion about the question. Sincerity in every word or advice.

Great Idea! How about the others? There is an affirmation to the things being explained.

Nice answer! All your answers are correct, it is necessary

as a good communicator that to be sincere in every word
coming out in your mouth and also they can feel what you
want to convey to them.

Okay! Next is Be a good observer.

 Another good way to gain valuable information

about people’s personalities is to observe their
behavior in different situations. If you combine
your observation of an individual’s behavior with
open communication, you’ll likely get a well-
rounded view and understanding of his or her
personality.

What help is given to us by being observant of the

environment? (Student will be called to give their opinion
about the question.)
(Student will answer)
This will help to think of a solution before we act.

That’s right!
You can easily know a person’s personality by being
observable, but don’t be judgmental right away, so this is
where being a good communicator comes in. Ask them
first why they act like that, why they speak like that, why
they dress up like that and so on.
Do you understand class?

Yes, ma’am!
Lastly is Be knowledgeable about mental strategies.

 A constellation of mental strategies facilitates the

learning and performance of physical skills. Be
aware of these strategies and implement them
appropriately in your programs, selecting them to
benefit an individual’s personality.
Is someone in this class who’s familiar about mental
strategies in education?

None, ma’am!
Okay! There’s a lot of different mental strategies in
education but I chose this because it’s inclined in our
major which is Physical Education like; Promote
positive body

B. Application
For us to further understand the different viewpoints of
personality, let us have another activity called “Iguhit Mo
Ako”

paper, create a poster that illustrates different viewpoints
of personality. You will be given 10 minutes to finish (The students will go their respected groups and do their

C. Generalization
Now, let’s play a game. This game is called “ Pick and
Pull” (The teacher will discuss the instructions of the
game.) Instructions:
1. The teacher will use the spin the wheel to choose the
student who will pick and pull.
2. If the wheel stops to your name, you will pull the stick.
3. If the stick that you pull is a sport, then you need to (All students will participate in the activity)
identify what personality should you manifest on this
