Small objects (e.g., paper balls or bean bags)

Review questions (20 in total)

Scoreboard

Team Formation: Form teams of 2-4 students. Each team should have a designated captain

responsible for keeping track of points.

C. Enabling Activity

1. Activity

Video Presentation: A video presentation will be presented to the students showing different

examples of computer networks based on the topographic location.

2. Analysis

a. What are the different types of computer network that is shown in the video?

b. What is the importance of knowing the topographic location in setting up a computer network?

3. Abstraction

Types of Computer Network and Network Devices

What is a computer network?

A computer network is a group of two or more computers connected with each other for sharing

resources and information

Types of computer network

1. LAN (Local Area Network) LAN is a computer network which distances over a small

geographical area such as home, building, office, school etc.

2. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) MAN is a computer network which connects two or more

LAN networks in a city or town.

3. WAN (Wide Area Network) WAN is a computer network which spans over a large

geographical area such as country or the world.

Network Devices

Devices are required for communication and interaction between hardware on a computer

network.

Router - The main role of the router is to forward packets of information to their destinations.

Routers are more intelligent than hubs or switches as they store information about the other

network devices they are connected to.

Switch - A switch is a multiport network device whose purpose is to improve network efficiency

and improve communication between hubs, routers, and other network devices.

Wireless Access Point (WAP) – is a networking hardware device that allows other Wi-Fi devices

to connect to a wired network.

Modem - A modem, which is short for “modulators-demodulators”, is a piece of network

hardware that is used to convert digital signals into analog signals, in order to transmit them over

analog telephone lines.

Patch panel - A patch panel provides a way to keep large numbers of cables organized, enabling

flexible connectivity into network hardware located in a data center or an access or wiring closet.

The most common type of patch panel is used within an organization's LAN.

4. Generalization

a. What is the impact of knowing the computer networks in your daily life as an ICT student?

b. In your own words, define computer network and its importance.

5. Application

The students are divided into 2 groups and they will have a debate regarding the advantages and

disadvantages of computer networks.
