A.Analyzing Process Diagrams
Exercise 1: Look at the diagram below and answer the questions that follow.
1. What process does the diagram show? the manufacturing process of
leather goods.
2. How many steps are there in total? 11
3. What’s the first step in the process? Drying animal skin
4. What’s the last step in the process? Making final leather products

B. Process Diagram Introduction and Overview


Exercise 2: Look at the following opening of a model answer.
1. Does the student say what the diagram is about? Yes
2. Underline words that are paraphrased from the question.
3. Does the overview mention the total number of steps? Does it name all the
steps in the process? Yes. Just the first and final steps.
The diagram depicts how leather products are made.
It can be seen that the process consists of 11 steps, starting with drying animal
skin and ending with making the final leather goods.

C. Describing Actions with the Passive Voice


Exercise 3: Rewrite the following sentences in the passive voice.

Step 4. People wash the animal skin with water and lime.
=>The animal skin is washed with water and lime.
Step 5. People soak the skin in lime.
=> The skin is soaked in lime.
Step 6. A machine flattens the skin.
=> The skin is flattened by a machine.
Step 7. People soak the skin in tannin, a mixture of water and vegetable matter.
=> The skin is soaked in tannin, a mixture of water and vegetable matter.
Step 8. A roller polishes the skin.
=> The skin is polished by a roller.
Step 9+10 A truck delivers the skin to another factory.
=> The skin is delivered to another factory by a truck.

Step 11. People make the skin into leather products such as shoes, handbags, and
toys.
=>The skin is made into leather products such as shoes, handbags, and toys.

D. Using Sequencers
Basic Sequencers
Exercise 4: Complete the mode body paragraphs below with suitable
sequencers. Answers may vary.

To begin, animal skin is hung and dried. The skin is then transported to a factory
by a truck. Next, the skin is washed with water and lime and subsequently
soaked in lime. Following this, the skin is flattened using a machine.

Adverbials as Sequencers
Exercise 5: Combine the following sentences using the words in brackets.
1. The skin is flattened using a machine. It is soaked in tannin, a mixture of
water and vegetable matter. (before)
=> The skin is flattened using a machine before being soaked in tannin, a
mixture of water and vegetable matter.
2. The skin is soaked in tannin, a mixture of water and vegetable matter. It is
polished by a roller. (until)
=> The skin is soaked in tannin, a mixture of water and vegetable matter, until it
is ready to be polished by a roller.
3. The skin is polished by a roller. It is transported by a truck to another
factory. (after)
=> After the skin is polished by a roller, it is transported by a truck to another
factory.
4. The skin arrives at the factory. It is made into leather products. (once)

E. Practice
Exercise 6: Write the introduction and overview for the process using the
suggested structures in Exercise 2. Answers may vary

Exercise 7: Now write sentences to describe steps 1-9 using the passive voice
and sequencers. At least one sequencer should be an adverbial. Answers may
