The Franks Build an Empire

 As Christianity was spreading, political changes started


occurring.
 A powerful group called “The Franks” conquered Gaul
(present day France).
 This occurred under the rule of a ruler named Clovis.
 The Franks became one of the strongest kingdoms in
Europe.
 But still, their greatest achievements were yet to be
accomplished.

Charles the Great /Charlemagne


 Arguably the greatest Frankish King.
 Led the franks in building and uniting a huge empire.
 When he was done, his empire included France,
Germany, Austria, Italy, and Northern Spain.
 His efforts did not just include war, Charlemagne built
schools across Europe and brought scholars in to teach.
Session 1

Invaders Threaten Europe

 While Charlemagne was building his empire, new threats started


emerging.
 Invaders began to attack settlements across Europe.
 Muslim armies poured in from the south.
 Fierce warriors called “ Magyars” swept in from the east.
 From Scandinavia came possibly the most threatening group of all,
the Vikings.
Session 1
Vikings  The Vikings were especially terrifying
because their attacks were swift and savage.
 Because Vikings could sail their ships up
rivers, their raids weren’t limited to coastal
areas.
 They raided Britain, Ireland and other parts
of western Europe.
 They took prisoners to sell into slavery.
 They looted towns and monasteries.
 Europeans lived in terror of Viking raids.
