The project for this class is to produce:
EITHER

(A) an amended photograph of a room in your home, illustrating lighting

effects using a yellow pencil, pen or marker,

OR

(B) a sketch lighting plan with key explaining the symbols you’ve used to
indicate the locations of new light fittings to be installed in the space.

Alternatively, you could produce both parts of the project, (A) and (B), if
you want to work out the spread of light first on top of a photo, then
represent this more formally as a lighting plan, to help share your ideas
with professionals.

A - Working On Top Of Photos

This is a quick and simple way to investigate
alternative lighting solutions for an existing
room in your home.
Photograph the room so you can see as much
as possible of the space.
Print multiple copies of the photos in black and
white. It’s easier to focus on lighting without
being distracted by colour and pattern.
Use a yellow pencil, pastel, marker pen, or
similar to paint light into the scene. Try
multiple new solutions. Take a photo of your
work and upload this to the project area.
You could use software too for either or both
parts of the project.
In the photo above, Procreate is shown being
used on an iPad, along with an Apple pencil.
Alternatively you could achieve similar effects
using PowerPoint, Photoshop, Keynote, or
other software. The class does not include
software training, this approach would be
convenient for anyone who is already used to
working with these tools.
B - Creating A Sketch Lighting Plan
If you need to produce a lighting plan, for
example, to guide discussions with an
electrician, then follow the class instructions.
You’ll either need existing architect’s plans of
the space, or to follow the class directions on
measuring and surveying your room. Once
you’ve done this, refer to the class video on
drawing up a sketch scale plan of your room.
You can either do this on paper, or if you are
used to using CAD software, then this is also a
good option. Once you have a master plan,
keep this somewhere safe, work on copies of
this plan, not on the original.
To make a lighting plan for a room, all the fur-
niture must be drawn in (at the same scale), so
make a master furniture plan too.
The video lessons explain how to use tracing
paper (or kitchen baking paper) to create
lighting overlays on top of your furniture plan.
Initially using yellow pencil to paint light into the
scene, and then (with another overlay) replac-
ing yellow light with symbols to represent the
fittings that would create the effects.
Make sure to make an accurate key that in-
cludes all the symbols shown on plan. Add
dimensions too, so that fittings end up in just
the right place.
If the plan is for personal use you can stop at
this point, photograph and upload your work.
If you need to make copies to share with an
electrician, it’s best to redraw, removing the
furniture, and combining the outline of the
space with the symbolic and dimension
information. Once the plan is complete upload
a photo of your finished work to the project
area.
