What’s the difference between 覚えています(oboeteimasu) and 思い出します(omoidashimasu)?

覚える/思い出す with time line

My students often get confused how to use 思い出す and 覚えている.
Because They translate “remember” into Japanese.

Please take a look the picture below.

You learned the word of “うさぎ” and then your brain got it. At that time, you can say “覚えました。” If your brain couldn’t get it, you can say “覚えていま
せん。”

Once, you could “覚える”, you have been keeping the word “うさぎ” in your brain. But sometimes you can’t reach it when you want to recall. Then you can
say “思い出せません”.
When you try to recall it, and you could remember it, then you can say “思い出しました”.

覚えているんだけど、今ちょっと思い出せない

He knows his brain keep the word but now he can’t recall it for some reasons.

うーん、いくらやっても思い出せない。たぶん忘れちゃったよ。

He tried to recall it but seems difficult to remember. He might forgot it.

例文
丁寧（ていねい）/フォーマルに

A: 昨日の夜、何を食べましたか？
B: うーん、思い出せません。

A: こないだの授業の内容覚えていますか？
B: 昨日までは覚えていましたが、もう忘れてしまいました。
 A: 昨日習った漢字は、もう覚えましたか？
B: はい、もう覚えました。

カジュアルに/友達と話します

A: 昨日の夜、何食べた？
B: うーん、思い出せないよ。

A: こないだの授業の内容覚えてる？
B: 昨日までは覚えていたんだけど、もう忘れちゃったよ。

A: 昨日習った漢字、もう覚えた？
B: うん、もう覚えたよ。
