Macbeth Research Scottish History
I n the tragedy “Macbeth”, Banquo is the ancestor of King James I of England and is the noble friend of Macbeth.
Throughout the play, Macbeth’s accomplishments overshadow Banquo, and he is seen as a foil character to
Macbeth. When Banquo and Macbeth go to see the witches, he is told that his prophecy is that his children will rule
Scotland. After Banquo gets killed by the murderers of his son, Fleance takes the throne of Scotland. The man that
was based on Banquo, was the accomplice of Macbeth for the murder of the king rather than his best friend.
Malcolm:
alcolm is Duncan’s eldest son and is declared the heir to the throne at the end of the opening battle. After the
M
death of Duncan, Malcolm, and Donalbain flee from Scotland, fearing they will die like their father. He is later seen
hiding in England with Macduff, where he tests Macduff’s loyalty to Scotland. When Macduff proves himself to be
loyal, he reveals his true kingly nature and tells his plan to regain Scotland from Macbeth. In Scottish history and
the play, Malcolm kills Macbeth instead of Macduff and rules Scotland as king.
Duncan:
ing Duncan, the king, represents stability and just leadership in the play Macbeth. He boasts traits of a benevolent
K
ruler however it is his level-headed and kindly nature that sets him up for death at the hands of Macbeth. His
character contrasts with other major players as they engage in sabotage and murder to seek his throne.

Duncan was the grandson of the king of Scotland, and was named ruler of Strathclyde (a region of Scotland) when it
was absorbed into scotland. By doing this the king, Malcolm II, violated the system of succession. This system said
that succession alternated between two branches of the royal family.
When Malcom II died, Duncan took the throne with relative ease. However, he was soon faced with a rifle in
Macbeth, the Mormaor (sub-king) of Moray (Northern region of Scotland). Macbeth likely had a better claim to the
throne. They face each other in battle and Macbeth kills Duncan.
Lady Macbeth:
I n Shakespeare's play, Lady Macbeth is evil and manipulative. At the start of the play she already begins to plot the
death of King Duncan. She manipulates her husband to kill Duncan by threatening his masculinity. Her fall into
madness begins as the guilt of her crime follows her. Yet in real life, Gruoch ingen Boite is Lady Macbeth’s name.
Originally married to the King of Scots, Gille Coemgáin. Macbeth was actually her second marriage. During their
marriage she gave to the poor and benevolently ruled beside Macbeth raising her son to be the next King of
Scotland.
Macduff:
I n MacBeth, Macduff is a character motivated by revenge for his wife and son. Which leads him to kill Macbeth.
Despite this, his character is your typical hero trying to stop Macbeth from claiming the throne. Though there isn’t
a lot of information on Macduff in real life, he is found to be of royal blood. A son or grandson of King Dubh.
Meanwhile, the real-life events show that it was Malcolm (King Duncan’s son) who killed Macbeth and escaped to
England.
