Isolated danger marks are errected on, or moored on or

above, isolated dangers of limited extent which have navigable


water all around them. The extent of the surrounding navigable
water is immaterial: such a mark can, for example, indicate either
a shoal which is well offshore, or an isolet separated from the
coast by a narrow channel.

Safe water marks indicate that there is navigable water all


around a mark, it may be used as a centreline, mid-channel or
landfall buoy, or to indicate the best point of passage under a fixed
bridge.

Special marks indicate a special area or feature, the nature of which
is aparent from reference to a chart, sailing directions or NtoM. Another
function is to define a channel within a channel.

Special marks may be lettered to indicate:

 ODAS.
 TSS where use of the conventional channel might cause confusion,
though many schemes are marked by lateral and safe water marks.
 Spoil grounds / Cables / Pipelines / Outfall pipes.
 Military excercise zones / Recreation zones.
