Awareness of Obstructive sleep apnea among Population in Jeddah Saudi Arabia

Study objectives:
Main objective:
The primary goal is to assess the level of awareness of obstructive sleep apnea among Jeddah's residents
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Secondary Objectives:
- Evaluate the foundational knowledge regarding obstructive sleep apnea among residents of Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia, encompassing symptoms, risk factors, and available treatments.
- Identify knowledge gaps and potential misconceptions within the population concerning obstructive
sleep apnea.

Study Hypothesis:
Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no correlation between Jeddah residents' knowledge levels regarding
obstructive sleep apnea and their demographics.
Alternate Hypothesis (H1): A relationship exists between Jeddah residents' knowledge levels concerning
obstructive sleep apnea and their demographics.

Methodology:
Study Design:
study design to evaluate the awareness of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among the population in
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The cross-sectional design allows for data collection at a specific point in time,
offering insights into the prevailing awareness levels among Jeddah's population.
Sampling method:
The sample will be randomly selected from the community of Jeddah's population in Saudi Arabia.
Study Area:
The study will be conducted in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Study Duration:
The study will span six months to allow for comprehensive data collection, analysis, and interpretation
within practical considerations in hospital settings.
Study Tools:
The primary data collection tool will be the OSA Knowledge and Attitudes (OSAKA) questionnaire,
focusing on assessing participants' knowledge regarding obstructive sleep apnea. The OSAKA scale is a
validated instrument commonly used to evaluate knowledge and attitudes related to sleep apnea. The
questionnaire will be presented in simple language suitable for non-medical participants and translated
into Arabic for participant comprehension.
Sample Size (Selection of Study Participants):
Based on the 2022 census data stating a population of 7,680,000 in Jeddah, the sample size will be 385
individuals, selected randomly, with a 5% error rate and a 95% confidence level.
Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria:
Inclusion Criteria:
Residents of Jeddah.
Age 21 and above without prior OSA diagnosis.
Exclusion Criteria:
Individuals under 21 years old.
Sleep disorder specialists.
Those previously diagnosed with OSA
Methods of Data Collection:
Data will be collected through self-administered OSAKA questionnaires distributed electronically to
eligible participants within a specified timeframe for completion and return.
Statistical Techniques:
Data analysis will involve both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics, including
means, frequencies, and percentages, will be used to summarize participants' characteristics and
responses. Inferential statistics, such as chi-square tests and t-tests, will be employed to identify
associations between variables and assess differences in awareness levels among various healthcare
professional groups.
Outcome Measures:
Primary outcome measures involve assessing the awareness level of obstructive sleep apnea among the
population in Jeddah, variations in awareness across different professional groups, and factors that may
influence awareness levels, such as years of experience or specific departments.
Analysis Plan:
Descriptive Analysis:
Summarize participant demographics and characteristics.
- Calculate mean scores and percentages reflecting various aspects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
awareness.
Inferential Analysis:
Employ chi-square tests to assess associations between categorical variables.
Use t-tests to compare mean awareness scores among different groups.
Subgroup Analysis:
Analyze awareness levels based on level of education, Age, and gnder.
Identify patterns and trends in OSA awareness within the sample.
Multivariate Analysis:
Perform multivariate regression analysis to identify independent predictors of OSA awareness among
health staff.
The statistical significance level will be set at 0.05. Data analysis will be conducted using statistical
software (SPSS version 24).
